Tonneau Applique replacement, What a pain in the %ss

Post by 03Mach1 »

Just replaced the tonneau cover applique on my '88 Vert. Thing just pulled off with a little bit of pressure. Didn't even ruin the old one which was real surprising given my previous R&R projects. That was my wife's statement by the way. The damn thing was held on with some type of liqiud nails adhesive. Took me three and a half days to gingerly scrape that sh*t off. Did i mention it's been over a hundred degrees the past week.

Put the new one on with 3M tape and seems to be holding thus far. Still haven't taking it on a road test as of yet. Only problem is the new applique doesn't cover the entire tonneau (fingers that stick out closest to the doors). Called Hank and he is sending out the caps to complete the replacement. Still waiting on the rims that i ordered too. i'll snap and post some pics of the new additions when she's done. The car should be ready for the Long Beach car show (Mustangs at the Queen Mary) Hope some of you local guys can make it down to the show. Would be nice to chat in person.

03Mach1, do these caps of which you speak go at the end of the "fingers" you've described? If so, I need some. The only thing wrong with my tonneau is a little bit of wear on the material at the ends of the "fingers" from previous owners not being careful when putting the top back up. If I could cover those up without replacing the applique, I would be very :D

Now I see the parts on Hank's site. Were these stock in 87? Mine doesn't seem to have them, but if I could retrofit them to cover up my minor blemishes, that would be very cool.

My original tonneau cover was one piece with the fingers over the edge where it meets the door jam. i had to replace it because my bow seal was ripped and the previous owner scraped the vinyl off of the top. when i sat the new one on it was shy of covering about an inch of the cover and looked funny. took me a couple of minutes to figure out what was different. I didn't see the end caps shown on Hank's site. He just told me what i needed and that he'd send them out. I can't recall why the replacement didn't come like the original. maybe Sandy would know.

I don't think you'll be able to hide blemishes on you orginal cover with the end caps. if yours is damaged like mine was it will have to be replaced or refinished.

Well I got the end caps and they are black. thought they would be color coordinated with the applique. I haven't had time to figure out how they go on and what it will look like. I'll let you guys know.
