Capri Top Pulldown - Repaired

I finally decided to work on the top/tonneau pulldown motor on my car. Since the motors are what usually go out, that is where I started. Starting with my trusty test light, volt meter, and the ASC schematics, I went to see if there was any power to the motor. Nothing. No power at the either the pulldown switch or the trunk interlock switch. I traced all the wires back to a green 'black box' that was located in the left trunk fender well that was not in the schematics. This ended up being a set of relays for the pulldown system. When testing the inputs, there was still no voltage on any of the leads.

The pulldown system is powered through the factory rear window defrost circuit. This rather fat 10-12 ga wire didn't have any power either. Using another set of schematics that I downloaded from AllData, I ended up pulling the heater controls out of the dash to locate the wire. I found another "black box" which was listed on the ASC schematic as "seat control module". It is another relay box. Testing the leads, I was getting power to the module, but not out to the defrost wire like it should have according to the ASC schematic.

I carefully cracked open the box and saw the trace on the circuit board where the power comes in was fried. It seems that when the 'bun warmers in the Recaros went bad it shorted out the "seat control module". Since there isn't a fuse between the seats and the module, I can see why. I put a fused jumper wire between incoming power and the defrost wire and everything in the back started singing. I buttoned everything up in the trunk and the whole system started working.

I soldered a jumper wire across the burnt trace and put the module back together. My next step is to place a fuse in the wire that powers the Recaros so it won't fry again then I can test the repaired module.

I just found it a little odd that the seats are what caused the pulldown to quit working. I doubt anyone would think of looking there.

TTT for this one! Thanks a bunch Mustang Marty, I just had an issue where my top wouldn't pop or pull up or down. I remebered this post and had a look. The connector coming into the relay behind the heater was loose! Now back to some top down fun
