I recently saw a mclaren in the Mustang milestones magazine. The articles were speaking on the next wave of collector mustangs. Our cars somehow came after the Saleens, The Cobras, Police package mustangs, 7-up cars, and the 1983 gs mustangs. Our cars, The AscMclarens, were honorable mentions. How could the Mclaren be an honorable mention?. The article had a picture and about three lines about the Mclarens.

Well, at least it was a mention. Better than nothing at this point.

Because Steve Saleen means $$$$$$$ plus, he supports the make and they are still being made. Translation = there is more $$$$ to be made.

ascMcLaren is a dead deer. American Sun Roof Corporation is all about what they are making today, and what they have planned for tomorrow.
McLaren ? Ha !

Also Mustang = FAST

Which ascMcLaren never attempted and becaue FAST = magazine sales
and FAST = the 16 year old buyer than has parents with $$$

Our cars, especially the convertibles, are not well know, and therefore not very collectible. Frankly, you also have the fact that the convertibles were not that well executed from the start. Yes, the body is beautiful, but the interiors are little more than a warmed over Mustang interior. A Mustang, like it or not, is an inexpensive car and so not up to the standards of a car as expensive as the asc/McLarens were.

Saleens were designed as performance cars, and all of the parts worked to that end. Ours are luxury (at least the convertibles) cars that only nominally achieved their goal.

Not that any of this will make me sell mine! Very Happy

Shiny Side Up!

Sandy I believe you are 100% correct here. Just look at collectibles in general. The successful ones usually have a racing history or performance enhanced like a GNX same maker as our cars!!! How many people have heard of Mustang Predators? Bricklins? etc... If there is no longer an advocate to "hype" up enough attention the vehicles they are soon forgotten.

I happened to stumble upon a copy of the "Mustang Milestones" put out by "Autotrader Classics", the one that Ken found and started this thread about. (Peter, there is no Volume #, month, year at all) It was the last copy this particular carryout had.

I agree with the great comments that people have posted on this thread. I've only skimmed thru it so far, and haven't had the chance to read it cover to cover. The first article is "Top 10 collectible Fox Body Mustangs".

The magazine's editor's top ten:

10. 1979 Mustang Indy Pace Car Replica 10,478
9. 1980-1981 Mustang Cobra ????
8. 1982 Mustang GT 25,000
7. 1984 Mustang 20th Anniversary Special Edition (GT 350) 5,260
6. 1985-86 Mustang GT (has to be over 40,000 ???)
5. 1986-93 Saleen Mustang (prod. #s not given - anyone?)
4. 1987-93 Mustang LX 5.0 Notchback (has to be over 200,000 ???)
3. 1992 Mustang LX 5.0 Summer Spec. Vert 2,193
2. 1993 Mustang Cobra (4,993 (107 "R"s))
1. 1982-93 Mustang SSP Police Pkg. (316 in '85, 3,792 at least in 12 yrs)

Honorable Mentions:

1979 Cobra ?????
1983-86 GLX & LX ?????
1983 GT Vert 1,001
1983-84 GT Turbo ????
1984-86 SVO ????
1987-90 ASC McLaren 1,806
1990 "7-Up" Vert. over 4,000
1993 Feature Cars (All white & all yellow) rarer than #3 above

Well, there it is, the list. 18 separate models/limited editions. How would all of you rank them, giving the honorable mentions consideration? I'd have to give it some more thought, but for starters I'd take out the '85-'86 GT (#6) and the '87-'93 LX 5.0 (#4) and replace them with the SVO for #6 and the ASCs for #4 (at least maybe #2 or 3).

Predators weren't listed (beyond rare), and what about the white '90 hatchbacks with red striping down the sides - SCCA or SSC??? I can't remember - anyone??? I'll bet there are more models out there that haven't even been brought up from '79-'93.

Was this the red one?

i know they had a yellow, white & red special edition that had either white or chrome 5 stars with the funky mirrors.

i alsways thought they were put out in this order

1990 - green(7up) - (turbines instead of 5 stars)
1991 - red
1992- white
1993 yellow

the green ones were the most common. used to see them all over Dearborn back in the day.

on a side note
funny story. a guy 2 streets over from me i grew up, took a 1986 Black Mustang GT & painted it that loud green/blue color the escort gt got around 1991/2. the next model year Ford put it out on the mustang.
oh yea, our houses were right next to Ford world Headquaters.
probably a little more than a quincidence Confused

Yea, #3 was the red one.

Honestly, those "Feature" cars were nice looking. They just made too many

Steve Saleen was running around to Ford Dealerships, in 1984-85 trying to buy cars to take to his shop, to convert to Saleens, WHILE Ford Motor Company was building, on their assembly line, purpose-built Mercury Capris to the specs required by American SunRoof Corporation in order to complete 841 ascMcLarens!

I would say therefore our cars are NOT aftermarket, as are Saleens, that never were , nor are today, FoMoCo prepped to become Saleens!!!!!

like i said before, in old school muscle car terms, ASC McLarens are like 60's Shelby's & Saleens are like 60's Yenkos!

on one, the manufacture built the cars to the outside companys desired specs and promoted(barely, in the asc case) them, and even took orders and sold them.

the other was built without participation from the manufacture but with there approval, but without any promotion or official participation.
