Saw this over on FEP...

Check out the custom decklid and quarters. This wasn't a Mustang coupe to begin with....

With the decklid and thick taillights, doesn't that rear of that Capri look kind of like a Dodge Shadow/Plymouth Sundance? Keep in mind that this is not intended as an insult; I always found those little econoboxes to be attractive, considering what they were.

That's a pure mystery!
I can tell what it's NOT, but not what it is! Very Happy

Not:- ascMcLaren / Bivouac / Automobili Intermecanni (or however they spell it) / "The Pony" from AHA in Canada /

I have a feeling it's aMexican Mustang, pretty sure on that, but no clue on the conversion....

I was getting a Futura/Z7 look from it. Since it is custom, I am surprised the trunk lid is metal. Converting a Capri from a 3dr hatchback to a vert is a major indevour as witnessed in our McLarens. Would be interesting to see the inside and trunk. Who know's, could be a one-off.

Is does have flares on all four quarters... Didn't the Mexi-stangs just have the Capri front bumper cover on the coupes and Mustang covers on the hatchbacks?

'Ya know, I said it wasn't "The Pony" from A.H.A. ~ but I chenged my mind. I beleive it's their product. Look at the taillamps and the way the deck lid slants forward at the rear extreme tips. Other differences can be blamed on their being different models. The magazine article being the top of the line and the car on e bay being at the lower end. VERY few of these were made ! A.H.A. did quality work and was a recognized aftermarket convertor for FoMoCo.

I just red the second page of the Motor Trend article that was posted on eBay. (the first is impossible to read). The thing that I found interesting was the source of the trunk lid and top...

"Measuring a 450SL, he found it to be very nearly the same dimensionally as a Capri. The fact that he uses a Mercedes trunk lid and it looks right at home on his convertible is testimony to the similarity of the two cars. Even the top bows, linkage, and hardware on this prototype are from a Mercedes, modified for the Capri"

Another interesting fact was the cost of the car. $8000 was the cost of the conversion bringing the price between $13,000 to $15,000. Not bad if you consider that my fully loaded 1979 Mustang was $8300 new.

I'm surprised that whoever converted the car didn't put the Mercedes SL front end on it as well. I remember seeing a couple of those conversions back in the '80s. One of them was a Capri that featured the blue and silver tutone paint, and once I got past the Frankenstein aspect of the creation, I realized that it looked kind of cool.

I remember those kits, based on the 380/450SL nose. Here is one based on the 500SL

No, it was an 84 Mustang. Click through his site a bit farther and you'll see he has a picture of the before and after.

He also writes how the Lebaron can be used but the Mustang is better for the performance you can build into it.
