Does anyone know if the pull down motor on the mustang was shared with the chevys?
They were both converted at ASC at the same time.
Just wondering, because it might make sourceing them easier.
I know the pull down motor on the capri is a trunk motor from a lincoln |

Actually it's from a Cadillac. _________________ 1986 ASC vert - #86-0001

It seems they are pretty common General Motors product. I think there is a 3 wire and a 4 wire unit or maybe the switch part on top has the 3 wires. It was easy to find on Ebay a while back including a reproduction plastcic housing. You should be able to score one for $50-$100. _________________ Kevin Gold card MCA Judge for Fox Body

I need to pick one up. Mine is toast.
I've noticed the last 5 years alot of people running into this problem, many have reached their life span it seems.
I've heard so much conflicting advice on these, its hard to get a grasp on what is what.
I've heard chevy, I've heard cadillac, Lincoln...... specific years.
Hopefully I can find the right one on Ebay....
Anyone have any part numbers? _________________ 1988 ASC McLaren #688 |

To add a few cents worth on the topic - Seems more common for the internal gears to cause problems than the actual motor itself to fail. Considering it's only used for about 3 or 4 seconds at a time it seems like the motor should last a long, long time. Of course there is potentially the matter of age and the possibility of water intrusion. That's a whole 'nother ball of wax.
On mine the top completely jammed. Motor absolutely would not release. Turned out the internal gears were the issue. Motor itself was fine. Words of wisdom: Heed Sandy's prior warning about NEVER using the motor to pull the top down completely tight against the tonneau cover! After much contemplation and several attempts, it is a repairable scenario as long as the nylon teeth aren't already heavily worn or stripped. Posted extensively on the topic some months ago. Not sure how to link to the old post but it's on here. Hope this helps! _________________ 1988 ASC-McLaren Red/Blk/Gray 5-speed

The Capri uses 84-86 GM part, caddy and others all the same. I am sure you can find the part numbers if you do a search on ths site. _________________ Kevin Gold card MCA Judge for Fox Body

bUT..... YOU DID not EXPLAIN why IT IS important TO NEVER TO PULL THE TOP ALL THE WAY AS IN " NICE AND TIGHT"
iF SHE JAMS WHEN THE TOP D O W N ...... YOU NEED TO GET IT UP LIKE.....NOW !!!!!!!!! OTHERWISE YOU CANNOT USE THE CAR OR PARK IT OUTDOORS.
SO.... IF YOU PLACE YOUR FINGERS UNDER THE BACK HEM OF THE CLOTH TOP, REACH AROUND WITH RIGHT HAND AND PUSH THE BUTTON, WHEN YOU FEEL THE TOP'S HEM TIGHTEN ONTO YOUR FINGERS THEN QUICKLY LET GO.
THIS GIVES YOU THE LEEWAY TO GO THE OPPISITE WAY THAT YOU WISH TO GO, AND WILL FREE THE MOTOR AND / OR GEARS UP - AT LEAST SO YOU CAN HAVE A CLOSED CAR. _________________ Sandy passed away in 2012. He will be forever missed.

Ok fellow ASC owners......
I'm having the dealership, where I purchased my car, work on my top motor mechanism. They aren't having much luck. The top is up, which doesn't allow for hardly ANY room to work to get that motor out or removed. The solinoid does release the tonneau cover, but thats it.
Any advice??? and yes, we tried "jumping" the motor with a sudden electrical jolt, but it didn't work.
(If the top was down this would be 100x simplier..... obviously).

I believe the 87 and up are different than the earlier ones. On my 85, I just use the latch and no motor (in place but not working). Just have to fit the fingers in the gap between the tonneau and the trunk lid to lift. I have yet to look at my 88 as I have only had it a few weeks and all is working.
On the 85, the top is latched by a lever on the tonneau. Lift up, releases the top hook, lower tonneau latches the top hook, so get it in place before lowering the last 6 inches or so. Works like a trunk lock to hold the tonneau down and the motor pulls the whole thing down.
Three steps open/close
-engage hook
-motor pull down or leave in down position and push to latch position
-latch tonneau lock (like trunk lock)
Open is the reverse. _________________ Kevin Gold card MCA Judge for Fox Body

New to this site. I have 88 mustang mclaren and my convertible top will not release from the tonneau top. I here the motor working, but it will not release it. I been reading through this site and tried just about every idea everyone posted. Is there a manual release latch somewhere on the car or any other special trick to get this releases? Please help |
