I'm looking to buy a 1985 or 1986 ASC Mclaren Mercury Capri in blue/orange color. I do not have the time or inclination to do any restoring, so the car must be in excellent condition and not need any major work.

It was the most produced color combination, but the blue differs between the years.

Yes because it is the Ford factor blue which came on the Capri. Ford changed it slightly from 84-86. With the Orange striping, you totally don't even realize the difference.

3L > Dark Blue Metallic of 1985:- 3171
7B > Shadow Blue Metallic of 1986:- 3865

Here are the color chips. The scans don't show the colors the best but I think you can see that the three Blues are very close.

The '85 blue is very dark, much darker than the '86.

I always thought they where the same. And never seen 2 at the same time.

Now if only we could get all 3 years together for a Photo

Hmmm that's interesting. I'm thinking my 86 is midnight blue...when compared to 7B SVO's it's not even close

Check your buck tag on your car.

That will tell you the paint code your car was painted.

You car is original paint, right Mike?

No I had it painted in 99...even the door jams and such don't look 7B.

I was just looking at the chart Mike posted and it listed 7B for our cars for 86...my car isn't 7B! lol

Sometimes Ford and Mercury had slightly different names for the same colors, although the codes were the same.

Quote:
5C > Dark Cadet Blue Metallic of 1984
3L > Dark Blue Metallic of 1985
7B > Shadow Blue Metallic of 1986

Ford called them...

5C > Dark Academy Blue Metallic of 1984
3L > Midnight Blue Metallic of 1985
7B > Dark Shadow Blue Metallic of 1986

Of course those three are not the only ones.

Do you have your buck tag? Door tag?

My door tag has no color code. My buck tag had "3LL" stamped in it for the color code.

This will be the definitive answer.

If you look at the Capri lit...they didn't offer anything other than 7B for the 1986 Capri.
