I started smelling a VERY strong gas smell while driving, which was making it very difficult to drive. I also had a surging idle issue...

turns out my charcoal canister was bad. Either that, or the purge solenoid was bad. I ended up replacing both and the gas smell went away completely. I didn't want to mess with trying to clean the canister, so I got a new one from one of the big box Mustang shops. I got the solenoid from Advance Auto.

FYI--I had to walk in with the Part number, they couldn't look it up in their system because it kept coming up as not available for my car.

Now, the surge issue also resolved itself. I thought that might have been a vacuum problem, but I didn't think a clogged charcoal canister would have caused it. I bought an idle air control adjuster kit from one of the Mustang shops and have not installed it, yet. I probably will, but I think I might be finding vacuum gremlins as I go..

Just an FYI to anyone out there having similar issues
