I have looked all over the internet to try and decode a VIN for a Mustang and have had little luck. I came upon your site and I am hoping someone can please help me with this problem?

It is a two seat convertible with a tag on the door that says ASCMcLaren 02 APR 1990. I haven't located any other ID plates or tags. Maybe, someone can help me with a location to look for the information I would need?

Thanks,

Chris

Well..... Okay, I've been called ALOT in my life, and I guess "ASC-Guru" is among the better. I woulda been on this alot sooner, but have been sleeping as I don't feel so good.

The information set forth in the preceding posts regarding your car is all correct, picking up and taking it from there, VIN 132893 was indeed shipped to Livonia Michigan's ascMcLaren on Autry Avenue. Once there, it became the 6th of a mere 65 units made for the model year 1990. I believe its DASH PLAQUE is # 253. The car was ascMcLaren painted in "ascMcLaren Red" which is actually Audi's "Laser Red" and Porsche's "Guards Red". The interior was Oxford White as was the vinyl convertible roof. The enkei-82 wheels matched, in white. She is 1 of 3 units made in that color combination. The white top & interior were exclusive to 1990.

Do you own this car ??

Thank you all, for the information. I am part owner with my younger brother. I have a few more questions if you could bare with me. The car is a manual 5-speed and I was wondering if there are any numbers on the car that would verify this? Also, the dash plaque is missing, is there anyway to obtain a new one?

Thank you once again,

Chris

I have a question as well, why would the dash plaque be #253 if only 65 where made that year? I know I'm missing the obvious but its late and I'm tired so sorry if this is a stupid or oft answered question, just wondering!!

Bolted to the radiator support there may still be a tag with the build codes of the car.

These get lost when cars get into front end collisions (common) or when the owners remove them (common too).

OK, thank you Mike, I will check the radiator support this afternoon and see if it is still there.

Thanks,

Chris

We need to make a permanent link to this, Mike.

Dash Plaque Numbers

In 1988 & 1990 ascMcLaren did NOT start over, since 1987 & 1988 were considered "SERIES I" and 1989 & 1990 were considered "SERIES II"

Therefore, here are your numbers:-

001-479 = 1987
480-1,494 = 1988
001-247 = 1989
248-301 = 1990
1901-1912 = 12 Silver Anniversary Edition 1990s

Any Dash Plaque beginning with 16_ _ is a "Service" Plaque, sent to people who lost the original and request another.

To answer your question about obtaining a replacement of your original # 253 it's possible, but costly. Figure in the neighborhood of $120.00.

Sandy, you can edit this....I might be nice if you add info about the dash plaques from 84-86 too, including coupes. Also info about their placement on the cars would be nice (didn't they put some plaques on the outside) so as to make the information more complete.

The numbering of the 1986 Capri ascMcLaren Hatchback Coupes was done from # 001 to # 115. Due to the fact that ascMcLaren brought inside about a dozen or so cars at a time to convert, the numbering process was not always exact. Close, but not exact, in that one car may have been completed a day sooner than another car that came in at the same time. One might be # 88 while the car that was finished last might be # 86, just by way of example.

EuroCoupes were not numbered. 1985 Coupes were not numbered. I am not 100% positive regarding the 1985 Grand Prix IV group of 30 units.

i have seen no numbers on my gp4 but did find a reddish and green card with all the paperwork red one had #29 on it and green one had #30 on a 5x7 card hand written mayby it was the previous owners # at the day care line or # of car that went out on track who knows but i will save them and not use them as costers Laughing
