How close is muscat red to the jalapena red available on the 1985-1986 Capri?

Jalapeneo red is more orange and is typical to have the Muscat red over top of it with the engine compartment in the original color. It's close enough not to be anoying.

Thanks. Sandy, do you know why the powers-that-be repainted the cars Muscat red, instead of going with jalapena red? Was it part of the effort to differentiate them from the regular Capris and create exclusivity?

I have frequently wondered about how the colors that were chosen, WERE chosen and the "whys & wherefors" of the selections. Seems either nobody knows, or the people who did it, are long gone. Was there an intense study, did they meet with others within ascMcLaren or Ford or other avenues? We will never know. The above listing took me 1 year to compile, and a tremendous amount of work went into it. Cross referancing codes with paint books, with Sikkens, with web sites, with Sherwin-Williams and others. As one can see, Jubba Blue was a holdout, and was never found. I think it was a custom mix.

I do know that, yes, they tried to pick colors that were NOT, had not and (hopefully, would not) appear on Mustangs & Capris of the 1984-1993 era in time. They seemed to be very keen on the Merkur XR4Ti colors, but...again...that is (was) because those cars were actually painted using SIKKENS paint, when new.
The paint process on them was tops! The paint has some form of plasticazation in it. It rarely chips, and is extremely durable ! The Red seems to be the most prone to fading, from what i've seen.

In 1989, they offerred "Special Order Paint" ~ allowing the buyer to pick any color they wished ! It was $ 806.00 extra cost. There was one (1) taker, and if you look back at the list, you'll see the Truimph's British Racing Green Metallic" color that said buyer wanted.

The ascMcLaren Red cars of 1988 (Muscat Red / Red Snapper)were clearcoated, but none of the other colors were, nor were they prior. The 1989 & 1990s were all clearcoated.

I've often wondered why Ford stopped offering a blue on the Capri RS from 84-86....while asc picked it up for their use for those 3 years.

One of the (very) few people still at asc, today, that was also there when our cars were being made, is in fact one of the painters. However, HE PAINTED. He painted in the colors they supplied him with, so he has no idea why the colors he had to paint with were the colors that he had to paint with !!

OK, The history first: I was a Sikkens Rep when they were being made. The cars were hand sprayed using Sikkens Acrylic Urethane products. I talked to one of the painters while he was in the middle of painting a red convertible. The solid colors came in 22 gallon drums usually. It had a little pump in it to keep the color well mixed. The paint could have also been supplied from the local factory store in a pinch or for special colors.
As far as choosing the colors, I am sure it was done at the local level. The local Sikkens Rep or Manager and someone in ASC Design chose the most popular colors of the day. That is why they were copies of readily available colors. The original choosing of these colors by the major OEM manufacturers was a much different process however. Car colors usually follow high fashion colors with a 3-7 year lag. Most car colors are decided three years before production so that the suppliers can get the colors to the production line in time. This is an extremely complex process. I can not even begin to explain how that process works. Here's a really weird color fact: Greens comes back into fashion every 27 years on average.

Sikkens will be able to supply you with any color that you need for a re-spray. The paint will not be the same chemically as it was back in the 80's though. They could still use lead back then. That helps make paint last longer.

I am positive that they did not use any plasticizers in the original paint. Sikkens only used flex agents back then. These are two completely different products. Plasticizers do not become a part of the paint film, Flex agents do. The Sikkens paint that they used back then was very flexibile without any additives so they probably didn't use a flex agent. For example, a paint color Spray Out card could be flexed at least 90 degrees without cracking the paint film back then. However they may have used flex agent in the paint that they used on the bumper covers. If they used it on the whole car it would have really slowed up the production line. Flex agent really slows down the dry time, approximately double.

THANK YOU! ~ and a very hearty WELCOME to you. I went nutty trying to think of a certian word, that I wanted to use, & I just could not think of it...so I substituted a sorta made-up word, in plasticzers. The word I wanted (thank you) was in fact urethane !

The two things that were very interesting to me were that somebody (probably ascMcLaren) renamed the colors from their original source, and that whomever picked the colors went all over the place, using Porsche, Cadillac, Merkur XR4Ti, Ford, Lincoln, Nissan (AND Nissan HOME MARKET ONLY), Ford Truck, Toyota, Seat and Jeep colors.

I was also able to obtain the color listing of the finalized paint colors for the 1991 ascMcLaren, which, of course (sadly) never happened.

merk23literturbo,

Thanks for that info on paint, I never realized all the changes paint has gone through, I just buy it and spray it!

Sandy,

I bet the British racing green looks good, do you have any pictures of the car? Did it end up in the UK?
