Even with the difference in bolts, I found the hole was closer between the two but 1/8 of an inch off nonetheless.

I measured my original and it is 1.5" from the center of the hole down to the top of the cast housing where the stud comes out.
I also have the same tag on mine that Sandy has on his (E7SZ-3289-BA) and they cam in the E2 boxes.
I put the new one next to my original and took a couple of pictures for reference, they are currently in my personal gallery.
The two tie-rod ends are exactly the same EXCEPT for the raised inner part of the end cap on the newer one is slightly (about .030") smaller in diameter than the original.
All other dimensions are the same between the two.
My guess for the later '87 part number is that the newer one has an improved internal design, most likely in the persuit of less resistance or possibly for better durablity.
