Keeping in mind that I am ignorant of most things mechanical, I have a question. Why wouldn't the McLaren use an alternator like any Mustang or Capri with the same engine?

You are NOT ignorant! I have wondered the same. You will wonder ever MORE, when you read these facts:-

The 135 Amp. Lestek Alternator was in fact, installed BY FOMOCO, on the Dearborn assembly line, as it was also in the Special Service Cop Mustangs.
Why ?

The ascMcLaren (1987-1990) had far less power draw than 90% of all other Mustangs.
Firstly, UNlike the factory convertible, the ascMcLaren's roof was NOT power operated. To lift that roof took much power, yet the LX & GT 'Verts with power top made do with the standard Alt.

Secondly, unlike 90% of all Mustangs, the ascMcLarens did NOT have an Electric Rear Defroster !! These take ALOT of Amps to run.

So, therefore, the ascMcLaren (1987-1990) used less electrical output than any Factory Convertible and also less than any hardtop WITH the rear window electric defroster.
About the only Mustang that would have been less electrical power using would have been a Non A/C car, with manual roll up windows.

So, like you, I have no clue.

I was at Murrays today and we found an altenater from an 87 Lincoln Continental that will work, but it is only 100amps. Do you think that will hurt or make a difference?...I don't have anything that draws much power in the car.

Sandy.. I called the number you gave me and they said they only deal with dealers, but they gave me the number to a place in Mich who would sell me the altenator. They wanted to charge me 750.00 dollars for the part. the number is 1-888-769-8000

Go with the Lincoln part. Paying $750 to be "correct" is nuts.

Dear Friends, I need a replacement for the alternator on my 1989 ASC McLaren Mustang. My alternator died yesterday. Since it's death I have learned some interesting and unpleasant things about alternators in the 1989 ASC McLaren Mustangs. Apparently in 1989, ASC or Ford, I don't know which, switched from the standard alternator that they put in the regular 1989 Ford Mustangs and instead used a Lestek Model 9135F alternator. This alternator apparently is an alternator that was used primarily on GM cars and has very different electrical hookups than do the alternators that were used the non-ASC-McLaren Mustangs and pre 1989 ASC McLaren Mustangs. The alternators I have found so far, either align properly with the holes in the alternator mounting bracket but have vastly different electrical hookups or they have the proper electrical hookups but don't align with the holes in the alternator mounting bracket.

I assume and pray that I am not the first person to run into this problem and I am looking for help. Earlier in this thread I noticed that knsstang owns a 1989 ASC McLaren and he said he replaced the Lestek alternator with a regular alternator but he did not say which make and model number he found that fit the mounting bracket and wiring of the 1989 ASC McLaren. He mentions that at a parts store told him the alternator from a 1987 Lincoln would work but I checked that out and the wiring hookups don't match and the mounting bracket holes don't line up.

Earlier in this thread someone listed a 1-800 number to call and get a replacement alternator from Lestek but it apparently costs $750 which is way more that I am willing to spend unless that is my only option.

Does anyone know of an alternator from one of the McParts Stores that will fit the mounting bracket and the wiring connections in the 1989 ASC McLaren?

Oreily’s Autoparts has shown me everything they have that could possibly fit but none of them fit that have the proper wiring hookups. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I suggest getting your alternator repaired. Often the repairs are somewhat simple.

There are several rebuilders in your area.
Dixie Electric
Ace
Brownings

Just search alternator and start repair/rebuild.
