I wrote him & told him is car is a Mercury Capri.
Would he call it a Camaro if it was a Firebird?
Would he call it a Taurus if it was a Sable?
Would he call it a LeSabre if it was a Olds 88?
Would he call it a Monte Carlo if it was a Grand Prix?
Would he call it a Challenger if it was a Barracuda?
What is wrong with Mercury Capri people ???
This is like the 4th or 5th one I've seen since mid Summer of this year. _________________ Sandy passed away in 2012. He will be forever missed.

Sandy,
I thought the same thing when I spotted my car for sale in the local paper. The fact is "No one is looking to buy a Capri and have no idea what a McLaren is". To sell a used car, you need to grab their attention first. The word Mustang does it all. My car was up for sale for almost a year. Of course he was probably asking too much starting at $7500. _________________ Kevin Gold card MCA Judge for Fox Body

I completely agree, I don't think it's ignorance, it's just reality at work in that whoever is looking for a Mustang is going to see this car and that's a whole lot more people than are looking for a Capri. It'a not comparable to the Camaro/Firebird as the Capri never generated near as much of a following as the Firebird. _________________ Tom S.

Since this car is in my area, I took a look at it this weekend. The car has been sitting since 1997. While the current owner did replace the top, the previous owner let it sit outside resulting in trashed seats and other trim items. The door panels seem to be in pretty good shape for a 20 yo car.
It has 3 of the 4 center caps on the wheels and the body is in decent shape. The current owner replaced the hood and grill due to damage that was there when he purchased it. There are also some panels out of alignment. Pass door touches the front fender when opening and the windshield trim has about an 3/4" gap at the door/fender on the drivers side.
It is priced in line with 5.0 Mustang convertibles in my area in similar condtion, so if one looks at it that way, it may not be a bad deal. As one for a total restoration, then it will take quite a lot of $$$ to get it back to show quality.
Since I am in the market for FOX Mustang vert, I may give this car a second look. |

Not worth posting any photos as of yet...

Congrats!
Hank (www.ascmclaren.com) sells the pulldown motor I think. It ain't cheap though and I think you need a core.
Sandy knows which car it originally came from (Trunk motor out of a Lincoln? Caddy?). You might find one in the junk yard for nothing.
Seats can usually be recovered by yourself (if you have time). My dad is a wiz now that he's redone like 4 or 5 sets of seats from various cars. Just get the good hog ring plyers. I did my '67 Cougar front seats and it wasn't hard. Most seats are setup similarly.
Hank also sells NOS seat upholstery if you are trying for a resto.

Excellent. I know that I would like to see some photos now, particularly since the ebay auction had only two. Seeing a few now would also permit us to monitor the progress that you make with the car. _________________ Robert

I hesitate to mention the power pull-down stuff, as it's a Capri. Now, I've never owned nor seen close up to investigate a 1984-86 ascMcLaren 'Vert, BUT I've been told that they employ a different system than our ascMcLaren Mustang-based 'Verts!! Something to do with a J-hook and I have no knowledge if the system works the same as the later cars. Somebody once told me that the first 12 1987 'Stangs also had the J-hook, so I don't wanna speak to that which I might be real wrong.
That pull down motor is from a PRE 1985 Cadillac or a POST 1989 Cadillac. Omit years of 85 86 87 88 and you'll be okay...IF that IS the one you need, visit a junk yard. Hanks are rebuilt and will cost you $300. Steep for a re-bee. _________________ Sandy passed away in 2012. He will be forever missed.

The Capri top pull down process is definitely different. The top does use a J hook and not the threaded stud style that the Mustang top uses. Also, on the Capri, the motor pulls the entire tonneau down with the top. This of course is not like the Mustang style where the tonneau latches independantly and then the motor pulls just the top snug.

The 84-86 pull down motor is a 2 piece unit. Mine is in pieces so I just use it like a trunk latch. The switch attached to the motor. I have a new switch in a GM box. My motor is missing a brush.
I assumed they all used the same set up. _________________ Kevin Gold card MCA Judge for Fox Body

I finally was able to take a good look at my latching issue. My car doesn't have the J hook or the screw.... because whatever was there, isn't. By looking at it, I can tell that it should have the J hook. I'm going to come what out from left field.... Anyone have an idea where one would find a magical J hook that would work? |
