I think we're on the same page now, just stating it in different terms.
Yes. You HAD to have one of the STEREO radios in order have the Premium Sound option available, but the STEREO radios did not automatically include the Premium Sound Option.
Yes. There would have been two different versions of each STEREO radio (cassette and electronic units included). One WITH Premium Sound Printed on it, one WITHOUT Premium Sound printed on it. |

Yes. I just realized that when you say "Stereo" you were referring to radios without the "Premium Sound" printing. To me anything with an FM tuner is going to be "Stereo".
Here is the radio that used to be in my car. Note how it says both "Stereo" AND "Premium Sound".

Mike,
For what it is worth, my Dad's '86 Ranger that he bought new in the fall of '86 came with the same radio you show EXCEPT for the words "Premium Sound".
He just sold it about a year ago otherwise I could have taken a picture of it and posted it.

I would expect that Ford used the same radios in all the various cars.
I'm sure the radios were made by some other company.
I need to email a guy with a Saleen who thinks his car may have had a non-cassette premium sound radio like mine. I told him he could have it for postage. It's working and all the connectors are complete. I suppose someday it'll be worth $500.

If that "999" report goes with the car in your FEP album, I find it very interesting that even FORD calls it a GS. I would have bet money that it would have been identified as an RS.
I know, I know..."999" reports are supposedly not always accurate, but then how did they come up with this? The P225/60VR x 15 BSW Performance Tires were supposedly not available on the GS, I don't belive I saw any Vinyl, Charcoal - Interior Trim, and what the heck is the Cobra/Sport Appearance Group. I've never heard of that one. I haven't seen it in any ordering guide either. How would you order that? Was it Canadian? Maybe the RS equipped GS is a valid combination and not just a misbadging?
I think my car was easy to figure out. This looks a bit tougher and I find it extremely interesting. Does anybody else with one of these mystery RS/GS cars have a "999" report to compare it to.
I want everyone who has one of these mystery RS/GS cars to go and get themselves a "999" report and see how they compare. |

The 999 report demonstrates further that there are just so many crazy things about my car. It makes me love it all the more, even though there is a tiny number of people out there who give a flip about the details.
Whenever I broach these coding issues with my wife (in a vain search to find SOMEONE with whom to speak about the car), her eyes gloss over in a matter of seconds. _________________ Robert
