how can colors from the late 90's & 00's be correct for cars that were built in the mid to late 80's?

They were used in the past on 70s forward. I gave the most recent usage, so it would be easiest for you all to obtain. That's how !!

Furthermore..... no color on the listing is OLDER than 1985 and ascMcLaren was making McLarens IN 1985.

Speaking on behalf of anyone here who might also own a Red McLaren still wearing the ASC factory sprayed Sikkens paint, from personal experience I can state unequivocally that Ford's OEM 'Vermillion' is NOT a color match... but Porsche Guards Red is (thanks Sandy).

I'm sure plenty of you are aware finding touch-up paint for older cars can be a real challenge. None of the local auto parts stores carry touch-ups for older vehicles. And why you might ask? I was informed they dry out in the bottles/tubes over time and end up being thrown away... plus they'd sell so few it's simply not worth maintaining an inventory. Naturally if your factory paint is significantly faded don't expect a match unless done by computer matching. Best source I've found so far for obsolete/discontinued/rare/obscure paint colors is paintscratch.com - they got it right on the first try. They'll also manufacture it in any size/quantity you like and have the capability to do computer matching if you send them a part to scan. Takes about a week.

Nice to finally be able to fill stone chips, scratches etc. before they become bigger problems. Always follow up the base coat once you're satisfied with a coat of clear. Hope this information is of assistance to someone.

Art one point, asc ran out 0f the Sikens guards Red ( due to the fact it was among #1 & #2 most ordered. For about a 1 WEEK PERIOD Ford's Vermillion was substituted. It is UNknown (at least to me) HOW MANY
were done in Vermillion, thusly I included it. (But it was very few - my guess would be less than a dozen.) Now then - before I get my head handed to me... Yes, I do know about "Alpine Green Meallic." The color was listed (1987-1988 - - HOWEVER, on my listing - straight from ASC McLaren, of each car's paint...(how it was painted)..... There is NO Alpine Green car(s) listed !!!

Further, Ford had 3 slightly different versions of Alpine Green. But no paint code(s) listed as to WHICH (or 2 or all 3) were used ?? Their records show NONE were so painted.

To date - I have not heard of one.

Ahhhh, and the paint-plot thickens... great info Sandy! Appreciate that. There are so many obscure little details about these cars it just amazes me.

If anyone here happens to have one of those ultra-rare Vermillion cars and is sure of it... I happen to have a brand new paint stick with your name on it... just send a PM.

If you think your car is 1993 Vermillion, check code on driver door sticker for a Code FA93:21 code stamp.

ascMcLaren picked the colors outta the Sikkens paint color map, beginning in 1984. They did NOT know what or where or year the color's history was. Sandy researched the history thru the Sikkens Paint Map. going forword to & thru 1990. I know how to do that from days doing paperwork and paint research in a dealership's paint department.[
