Now listed in a no reserve auction on Bring A Trailer, it will sell in the next 4 days!

1986 ASC McLaren Coupe with Maximum Motorsports suspension

Located in Pasadena California

Price: No reserve auction on BringATrailer.com: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1986-mercury-capri-asc-mclaren-coupe/

This 1986 Mercury Capri ASC McLaren Coupe is a 64k mile example set up for HPDE and autocross events. The heavily reworked suspension was installed by last year’s NASA American Iron winners, Realspeed Automotive in New York. The car uses Maximum Motorsports’ Road and Track package, with some additional items for increased handling performance. This car features post-1987 spindles with upgraded front brakes, rear discs, an aluminum drive shaft, and a Centerforce clutch. The 5.0L V8 has been MAF-converted and features uprated fuel injectors, ceramic long tube headers, and a cold air intake. A substantial spares package is included in the sale. Located in California, this car has no emissions equipment and is titled in New York.

This car is said to be one of thirty-four Oxford White ASC McLaren coupes made in 1986, and is #49 of 115 total built that year. The car is nearly stock cosmetically, and the seller notes the older repaint performed by a previous owner shows some imperfections. The car originally had orange ASC McLaren wheels, and white set was installed by Hank Huisman, the current owner of ASC McLaren.

1986 was the last year for the second-generation Capri, which used a blockier front fascia than the contemporary Fox Body Mustang. It also featured a distinctive convex “bubbleback” hatch and unique rear fascia.

The front plastic header panel is cracked, and the hood has a crack on the inside. A replacement header panel and hood are included.

Instrumentation remains standard, but the seller has fitted a Bluetooth-capable Kenwood headunit and an aftermarket shift knob. The dash is original and has a crack near the center speaker, and interior plastics show less warping than is usually seen in early Fox Body cars.

The seats are original, and appear to be in good condition front and rear. The A/C is not presently functional, but an r134 AC kit is included in the spares package.

The rear hatch area is tidy, and the original retractable cargo cover is in working order.

The engine retains its original bottom end, but the top end has been substantially updated with numerous aftermarket parts including an original Ford Racing MAF conversion kit. The current setup has been dyno-tuned for 93 octane, but can be reflashed for other fuels. Other modifications include:

 • New BBK Air Mass Meter
 • New BBK throttle body
 • 24 lb. injectors
 • RPM Performer 2 upper intake manifold (Black Out edition)
 • Cold Air Intake
 • Ceramic coated long tube headers
 • H-Pipe with custom exhaust and flowmaster mufflers
 • New fuel tank with 255 lph pump
 • New fuel rails
 • Adjustable Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator
 • BBK Liquid filled fuel pressure gauge

A video of the car idling can be viewed above. As built the car will not pass emissions in California, and as such is currently titled in New York.

Several maintenance items have also been addressed including a new radiator, belts, hoses, starter, water pump, new fuel tank, and several new sensors. The drivetrain has received attention as well, and features an aluminum driveshaft, heavy-duty Centerforce clutch, Ford Racing T5Z transmission, and 3.73 rear end. The original transmission is included.

The car was set up for HPDE or autocross events by Realspeed Automotive in Bohemia, New York in 2014. The basis for the suspension updates was Maximum Motorsports’ Road and Track kit, with the addition of a torque arm. The car also features full length subframe connectors, a strut tower brace, and a solid steering shaft. Installing the Maximum Motorsports kit on a pre-’87 car required the use of post-’87 spindles, and the seller has fitted larger front brakes and converted the rears to discs.

Numerous spares are included with the car. In addition to the aforementioned header panel, hood, and A/C kit, the seller is including numerous NOS Ford and ASC Mclaren spares. These include light covers, sticker sets, some of the replaced stock pieces, a new heater core, shop manuals, the stock transmission, new fuel lines, and more that can be seen in the gallery at BringATrailer link link http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1986-mercury-capri-asc-mclaren-coupe/.

Such a nice car. 9k does not seem like a very bad price for a non OE car. But the parts and time make it worth so much more. Let us what state its going to.
