I'm not sure if the capris were the same, but I think all the '87'-'90s came with 3.08s. Anyone? (3.55s would be nice)

I *think* the l27 should be 3l27 which would be 3.27:1 Locking. The first number often is hidden by the bolt.

What does your door tag code for the axle say?

I personnaly have had a 90 coupe 5.0L that I switched to 3.55 with a shift kit in the trans. It made quite a difference. But after a little while I would have prefer a 3.73. The engine was still very quiet and slow running at 55 with the 3.55. it could have handle the 3.73 easy I think, with even more fun Smile and not much more gas.

373s is what i think i am going to get. It sounds like it the best all around gear for my aod. I was thinking 410s but that may bee pushing it if i decide to travle a long distances. not real concerned about gass as long as it is not real bad. i heard that one company sells 390s what may be what i realy want..I have to think it threw alot before i make a choice sence it will cost me about 500.00 for parts and labor. I want to get it right the first time for that price.

I replaced the 3.27's in my '85 AOD convert with 3.73's, and I was very happy with the results. Also installed an "A" servo and valve body out of an '89 Lincoln LSC into the AOD.

3.73's should be fine. 1986 Capri verts came with the 8.8 rear right? If not you might want to change it all together.

1986 COUPES - Full Packaged (not EuroCoupes) WITH 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANNY CAME WITH 3.73:1 RATIO,
if built under D32 (ascMcLaren) order code, followed by the code
indicating that it was to be a COUPE and not a Vert.

I was told way back when that my coupe's effective gear ratio was like 3:31 because the 225/50s were an inch shorter than the 225/60s the RS carried.

I wonder if they calibrated the speedo for that?

I do know even up, I'd smoke a 5.0 Mustang by a good deal.

I doubt they did. Too much work for that. That use to be a old trick people use to do. All you had to do was put a smaller tire and that would effectively increase your gear ratio.

Yes, they did redo the speedo gear.

The difference in the stock tire height and the ones asc used was like 5-7mph at about 65mph.

My speedo was always off when I was driving my car back in college and got a ticket because of it too. At that time I had the "normal" height tires.

That would be the only thing they probably did (the speedo gear). That would be the cheapest and quickest this to do. I assume they just added the 3.27 gear in. Close enough for government work.
