1986

All coupes (Full packaged) were ascMcLaren ordered as the RS 5.0 Model.
____________________________________________________________

But... did you know that convertibles with a 6 Cylinder HAD TO BE AUTOMATIC?
Convertibles with a V8 302 & 5 Speed manual were ordered from Ford as a RS, BUT convertibles ordered with a V-8 and Automatic were ordered as a GS It's true.

WHY? Because a R/S (5.0) was offered with 4-Speed Automatic OR with 5-Speed Stick, buyer's choice.

BUT While the Automatic was available with the V-8 on both models, the 5-Speed Manual WITH the V-8 was NOT allowed on the GS! The GS with V-8 had to be an Automatic. The Six Cylinder Converts were also ordered as GS models.

By ordering the Automatic with the V8 on a RS, saved the dealer money ( and the buyer) but, the dealer could NOT order a V8 with a 5-Speed on a GS, had to be a RS!

This is why the fog lights on a V8 Automatic are Hella. Ditto a 6 Cyl. with Automatic, also Hella, but the only 6 Cyl. with ground effects which would include Foggies in the front lower ascMcLaren air dam would have been the 1986 Spring Specials.
They used the foggies that came on the RS from Ford when car had Automatic ~ (Marchall) but when the GS arrived with no Foggies there were none to use, so ascMcLaren bought Hellas at a lower price.
\
Who Knew ? Know you do!

Want more?

Why do some Capri Converts have a rear driver-side Power Antenna and others have a black rubber whip-type antenna ?? Hmmmm?

Why do some Mustang McLarens (mostly 1987) have rear mounted black rubber "whip-type" antennas while the rest have the normal Ford front fender - Passenger side metal antenna?? Shrug

Sandy this is not right.

There was never a 4 speed manual from 84-86 for anything other than the small 2.3L engine.

The 6 cylinder cars never had a standard transmission.

You have automatic and manual transmission changed around I think.

I think you have this backward again. The v8 automatic cars would not be RS cars so they would not leave Ford with any foglamps..therefore requiring Hella foglamps.

The v8 5 Speed cars would get the marchals since those cars would normally be RS cars and get Marchals.

Sandy, this would be the first time I have ever heard asc cars coming with Marchals. I didn't even think they fit in the recessed asc air dams.

Shrug

Of course, if anyone has Marchals on their car, speak up!

There is NO way a Marchal 750 series light as fitted to numerous GT's and RS's would EVER fit in the opening for a Hella. And since the Marchal 750 series is the ONLY rectangular light fitted to Mustang's and Capri's from '79 to '86 that would rule out any other. The 850 series are bigger and the 950 series lights are bigger yet. Marchal made a smaller light in the early Nineties for the Escort I believe it's a 150 series, too late and too small.

I've had several of all of these lights and am very familiar with their sizes.

I was speaking of the 'Verts! None came with factory ground effects, from Ford. If they did they were omitted thru the "Sport Delete Package".) for ascMcLaren. The front air dam was part of the ascMclaren pkg on '86 'Verts
,if I recall they did not use the Ford 5.0 Front Air Dam, yes ?

Oh, thanks for catching the other goofs. I should NEVER do this on a Chemo Day ! My bad. Sorry - I remember everything but get everything mixed upside-down & backwards.

"Were I in the way when I feel off" ~~ says it all !

Correct, I got that.

Yes...but as was said, those Marchals won't fit in the asc air dam. If all the cars came with the GS bumper covers...there was no place for Marchal lights to begin with. Ford would have had to put them in the trunk or something. Even if they did, when asc went to put on the asc air dam, they couldn't use Marchals.

asc did offer at some point a GS sports package with a Marchal bracket to mount Marchals in front of the GS air dam...but that wouldn't have been installed by Ford and we haven't seen it on asc verts.

Of course, if any cars came with the RS bumper cover, they MUST get the Ford air dam, as the bumper cover is missing the lower half to accomodate the Ford air dam. The Ford air dam is the only one that would allow Marchal lights.

However, Sandy, I think the interesting thing is not the foglights. Its the fact that the GS got the CHROME grill trim. We have seen a good many asc verts come with GS CHROME grills! I think you have found the answer as to why that is so!!!

I thought we knew that regarding the chrome grille on them.

So, what Tom is saying is the oppisite of what I was copying from
the booklet to the assembly workers... I dunno

So, Tom are you saying that they ALL used hella ?? NO MARCHAL ON ANY CONVERTIBLES?

I know my coupe has Hella!

There is just no way an ASC airdam would accommodate Marchal 750 series foglamps. The mounting point for said lights aren't even the same.

Marchals use a single bolt or stud on a swivel while the Hellas in my Mc used four bolts going through the housing into the airdam. Not even close to being the same. Since I had my Hella lights out and also own a pair of Marchal 750 series lights I can state without a problem there is no way these lights are interchangeable in an ASC airdam.

This is the only way you're getting Marchals on a McLaren, Ford airdam.

These are Marchal 750's.

These are the correct Hella's, I owned this set but sold them awhile ago.

I need a set of Hellas too. I think the are the same as the ones used in the Saab 9000's early 90's. Good luck finding them.

I have seen them come up from time-to-time on E Bay, and they are always classified as SAAB Fog Lights from like a 1997/1998 Saab 9.5
