Rare ASC,
Your window sticker states the car came with an AM/FM Electronic Cassette Radio, but your car features a Premium Sound Radio.
did you or the previous owner change it?
i am talking about car the pace car by the way.

your window states it was the regular am/fm cassette, not the premium sound. premium sound was the top option.
all cars that were optioned with the premium sound would have the regular am/fm cassette listed for $300.00, then below that on the window sticker it would state premium sound system for an additional$138.00 (plus the original $300.00).

the standard radio was am/fm.

option radios were
1 - am/fm w/cassette (did not have the digital display)

2 - premium sound

i have a window sticker that states the info about the premium sound.
the radio you currently have may have been an upgrade at the dealership.

no window sticker does not state regular it states electronic it has the correct radio as per window sticker electronic am/fm cass says electronic on sticker and on radio so i am going with it being factory correct there may have been a premium sound option that it was not ordered with but if window sticker says electronic am/fm cass and radio says electronic and it is a am/fm cass and that is what is in car i think that pretty much figures it out. You even have it listed in your registry as electronic am/fm cass? most likley only motorsport capri ordered like this one thanks

ck out link of sticker:

check the brochure section. there were 2 styles of AM/FM w/Cassette

option 1 - AM/FM Electronic Stereo w/ Cassette.
option 2 - Premium Sound System

both had cassette players.
the best way to tell is the Premium Sound had the digital display in red.
the AM/FM Electronic Stereo w/ Cassette had knobs & and a neddle indicating what station it was on (old school radio style)

on a window sticker it would say "AM/FM Electronic Stereo w/ Cassette"
option cost was $300.00 (this is for option 1)

if a car got the Premium sound (option 2), it would state the same thing as option 1, but have Premium Sound System below it with an additional $138.00 added on.

cost for "AM/FM Electronic Stereo w/ Cassette" - $300.00
cost for "Premium Sound System" - 438.00

i am posting a window sticker with premium sound in the gp4 folder.
compare it to yours & you will see what i mean.
also look at the 85 brochure.

you said: on a window sticker it would say "AM/FM Electronic Stereo w/ Cassette"

ok it says this!

you also said:

both had cassette players.

the AM/FM Electronic Stereo w/ Cassette had knobs & and a neddle indicating what station it was on (old school radio style)

Let me explain the standard option radio for theses car is am/fm with two knobs. On top of sticker documantation you can clearley see my dash is original and has not been cut after factory to house the upgrade radio look at photo of my dash you could tell if this was a swaped deal if it had ever housed a two shaft knob radio. The premium sound option is the same face but extra charge was for the extra amp and poss up grade speakers that is what the extra charge is for over the $300 electronic radio. So ok one more time my sticker says elect am/fm stereo cass $300 and that is what is in car! please see my sticker and you will see what i am talking about not sure what you are looking at but do not mind clarifing Smile . and your photo is not showing up in GPIV"S

does it have a digital display or a non-digital display?
if its digital, then its a premium sound. if its not digital it is a AM/FM Electronic sound radio w/cassette.

all AM/FM Electronic sound radio w/cassette would state this on the window sticker with a cost of $300.00

all cars with Premium sound radios would state "AM/FM Electronic sound radio w/cassette" on the window sticker with a cost of$300.00 plus it would state "premuim sound system" with a additional cost of $138.00 , below where it states the "AM/FM Electronic sound radio w/cassette"
look at both your window sticker, & the one i posted. you will see what i mean.

anyone else feel free to jump in, i am not sure my wording is getting translated correctly.

it has a premium sound style in it currently.
it states Electonic on the plate, but its a premium sound radio.
the AM/FM electronic Stereo w/cassette looks nothing like what you have in it now.

however.... since 1985 was a wierd year for option adds & drops,
maybe the original style "electronic stereo w/cassette" may have been discontinued for the Capris in mid-year and a Premium sound style looking model may have become the mid-range radio option.

i had 2 friends with the original 1985/6 style AM/FM cassette Electronic radio.
1 was in a 1985 capri gs (non-5.0) & 1 in a 1986 mustang lx convert(v6)
and they looked nothing like the premium sound.

ok fair enough and i hear what you are saying clearley my take is: when you ordered the car for the $300 this is the radio you recieved electronic...... not the old school style. If you got a old school style that is not an electronic radio solid state mayby? ford would have a tough time selling that old school style for $300 they were not the best of quality! The whole premium sound upgrade thing is i feel is upgrade amp and poss speakers that is what the extra charge is for over the $300 radio up-grade i do not think premium upgrade was required if you ordered this radio. So this one was ordered with just the electronic radio and not up-grade premium sound. Anyone elece have any take on this?

586 & 913 were two distinct & seperate options!
Here:
http://www.ascmclarencoupe.com/Literature/DealerOnly/SalesmanGuides/85Sep_Mercury_SalesmanGuide_030.jpg But 913 REQUIRED 586 as a basis.

I have not delved into the radios on these cars too much but if you look here:
http://www.ascmclarencoupe.com/Literature/DealerOnly/ProductFactBooks/85_Mercury_ProductFactsBook_19.jpg

I think this is what Jason is saying...the picture of the radio shown at the bottom says "Electronic" but does NOT say "Premium Sound".

RARE-ASC, you may want to pull the dash pad or look under the dash and see if there is a Premium Sound amp in the center of the dash.

Maybe It was the wrong radio slapped into the car or something. You can plug the Premium Sound radios into the wiring harness without the Amp.

The upgrade to the Electronic radio did not automatically (was not supposed to) get you premium sound.

also trying to state that there was a radio option in 1985 called AM/FM Electronic Stereo w/ Cassette that had a non-digital display & looked very simalier to the base radio (non-cassette).
when i say old school style, i mean before digital display.
i believe 84/85 was the first year ford put a radio with a digital display in.
you all remember the radios with 2 big knobs, a needle indicating what station it was on, station frequncies were painted on the plastic, had big buttons for station pre-sets that had to be pushed hard so the needle could shoot over to that spot.
am i going crazy or does anybody not remember what radios looked like before the digital lcd age?
