I've now become McLarenized

Post by gregpro50 »

Well this got here at about 11:30 last night. I had to meet the shipper at the shopping mall in town. I used autotransportdirect and would recommend them to anyone. I had to drive it the rest of the way home and the alternator puked on me so I found myself changing an alternator in the dark at about 1:30am. Suprisingly it didnt take me long. It is going to need restoration but it is a very solid car and I dont think I need to change one body panel before paint.

Greg, once again, welcome to the fold. Great looking car, I envy you. My next one will be a coupe. Sorry about the misfortune with the alternator. It will all be worth it in the end. Guess I'll be seeing you both sites (FEP and here).

Nope, northern NJ is not that far from me at all.

I took pictures with the car wet so it looks better than it really is. I still have to hunt down some electrical gremlins and re-do the vacuum lines but it seems to run pretty good.

Binghamton NY - years & years & years ago, (seems like a different lifetime) I knew the I-C-P dealer there. He was sorta-kinda distantly related to a relative of mine. If he's still alive he'd be in his 90s.

I put on a set of 16" Riken wheels so I can have the originals refinished. Any recommendations regarding someone who can refinish the originals? They appear to be in good shape with no curb rash or anything. The paint is just flaking off and the aluminum is a little corroded in spots.

Has anyone ever refinished a set of aftermarket wheels like these Rikens to look like the originals? The mesh pattern seems real similar to the original wheels but these are 16".

I think I chased most of the electrical gremlins out of the car too. I kept frying alternators until I discovered it was the voltage regulator causing the problem. (after three alternators...) But I did get it to the point where it is now driveable and I took it for a little drive last night. It sure catches alot of looks.

Thanks. Problem is that I like too many cars but I have always wanted one of these.

Right now I am welding up the dreaded floorboard crack.

Many places can do them. I actually contacted Hank in FL and he redid all 4 of mine to PERFECTION to stock specs. He gave me a good deal on them.

I bet he can get the Rikken ones done too.

I'm lucky, the underside of my car looks brand new, no cracks yet but after all the people that have had problems I'm going to do something about it before it gets to that. Capri's are hard to find, let alone asc's.

I think I need to move, the only way a car gets looks around here is if its a crown vic or equivilent with "dubs". Still, there is the occasional camero driver that you get looks from. Mine is down now because my speedo gear slipped back down the tail shaff. It happend when I raced my captains 328i. It was worth it, I won

Back home in California I used to get looks all the time in my old 86 capri

OK, I am going to get ahold of Hank then about getting the original wheels redone. Do you have a ballpark idea of what it runs for a set? I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I want the Rikens done.

The floorboard crack is a common issue with all fox mustangs and capris. It most commonly occurs where the rear of the drivers seat bolts to the floor closest to the rocker panel. I must've had a fat bastard driving mine because it was about 12" long and was starting to rust. I actually had to splice in a couple 2" patches of metal where it got thin. The good news is that it should be the only welding I am going to have to do on the car whatsoever. The rest is completely solid.

I took some pics of the work from start to finish figuring I would write a tech article from it so I'll post them when I'm done. I should be able to finish up tonight.
