I went and looked at it. I posted what was really wrong with it, and got bashed by the owner because of it. Rust holes the size of softballs, a questionable front subframe (strut tower), and bondo galore. If the guy who bought it (supposedly a body man) can fix it, it is a miracle. MercRS...the car was in Markham, 167th and Kedzie. At a hot rod shop that closed its doors.

Some people have no respect for a special car. Recall that mess listed in West Orange, N.J. ? The black one w/out wheels & tires and shaved door handles? That was another. Sadly, the McLaren attracts a small element of people that are very unlike the people drawn to see a 1961 Bentley or a 1970 Jag E-Type or a 1962 Corvette. THESE types would NEVER do what all of us have witnessed on here. You think a Corvette buff would shave ther door handles on a 1959 Corvette? A 1965 Mustang Gt. A 1964 Stude Avanti? A 1956 Eldorado Biarritz? Of course....never !
It's sad, but everytime it happens one of ours that are near mint or mint becomes just one peg higher on the what it's worth chart. Here's why...
Ask any car salesman. Their average commission on a new car is around $80.00 Big freakin deal ! Lucky if after taxes it's fifty bucks!
Lets talk used cars....... Minimum of $200. Why ? Buyer can buy your new 2007 car anywhere, but you've got the only 2001 Volvo Turbo Wagon in Dark Green in the state with only 33,000 miles on it, and your wife wants it baaaad.

Agreed.
But, late model (1979 and newer) Mustangs attract a different breed of buyer than a 1979 or newer Jag XK-E buyer, or a Mercedes SL buyer, or an Eldorado Convertible buyer or a Corvette buyer.
They like the car, enough to pay money for it, and then wanna customize it & race it and ultimately, abuse it, all the while, the Jag owner is restoring his prize to its original condition and would never "customize" it, nor alter it, nor abuse it. He is concerned with making it authentic and Judge-Worthy at next years Concours, while the ascMcLaren owner (age 17) is worried about his 0-60 run next spring.
Sure, we do have some real sincere quality owners like Mike here who has a drop dead beautiful example, but for every one like that, there are 10 POS in college parking lots awaiting their shaved door handles, swapped out engines and padded roll bars and Pep-boys "easy install" pop up sun roofs for only $129.00. See?
People on this site are more akin to the XK-E owner, but face facts, we are in the minority! You should see some of the photos postal mailed to me over the years, of ascMcLarens, Capr7 Mustang & Coupe & Vert. 'Nuff to make you shed tears. Everything from sinking into mud on a farm to a condo for rats, to a steeet drag race car in Brooklyn, NYC that, like most that street race, wound up splitting a telephone pole in half, and killing its owner.

Wow, that just terrible. I can't imagine what that McLaren looks like after tangoing with a tele. pole. (if you have the serial # off that car Sandy, you can mark that one off as DONE, RIP).Sandy wrote:Agreed.

Thats something that never bothered me the the first 7-8 years with the car, but it does now. NO airbags..... What was the first year for those? '89?

Driver side ONLY air bag in a Fox appeared on the 1990, which is WHY the 1990 Mustang ( and ascMcLarens) do NOT have tilt steering wheels. Ford had yet to come up with tech to include BOTH on one steering wheel.
