Thanks guys, I've spent many hours cleaning and buffing to make her look good again. I've got a few things to fix still, driver seat, windshield molding and I'd like to repaint the wheels also.

Looks nice... even better than mine, which has fewer miles. Mine has the usual bubbling near the edge, where they cut the 1/4s.

This car had the bubbles also, I've been doing bodywork and paint for over 25 years so it was a fairly easy fix for me. I used house of color base/clear and was surprised at how well the paint matched. I was going to paint the whole car but the old paint seems to have a nice deep shine still. Thanks again for the comments, it makes all the work worth it to hear good feedback.

I am surprised that you guys have those "bubbles" ~ Only 1984-1986 CAPRI 'VERTS are known to have bubbles & rust on the rear-most side upper quarter panels have had the ascMcLaren rear fender caps installed.

Thanks Sandy, I'm glad you like it.
This car came to New England from Boca Roton FL. in 2001. I think the extreme heat of FL. had something to do with the cracking of the polyester body filler asc used on the quarters. I also had problems on the toneau cover and the right front fender where they removed the antenna. There wasn't any serious rust anywhere, the filler just cracked and lifted. There's also a little blistering on the bottom of the doors. When I was changing the door speakers the other day I found a bunch of small pieces of what looked like sraps of metal from when they chopped the top. They sat in there for 20 years and made the doors start to rust. maybe the trash can was full so they just tossed the extra metal in the doors....bizzare.

Hmm... so it wasn't rust causing the bubbling? Looking at mine, I think it's more of a problem with the bonding of the filler, but I have been worried about there being rust under it. If I am correct, the original paint is single stage, yes? In any case, I was going to re-do the 1/4s after a few other projects were completed.

Other than the 1/4 tops, there are no other signs of problems on my car, though there are a few rock chips on the hood.

Yes, the original paint is single stage urethane. It's nearly impossible to blend singlestage. You'll have paint the entire quarter unless you know someone who has many years experience with spot repair. The original paint on my car is very thick so buffing wasn't an issue. The lifting and bubbling happens when water gets under the body filler and causes rust, so look close to see if there are any hairline cracks on or near the bubbles.

No cracks at all, and it doesn't look like the typical rust bubble. When i get home, I'll post a pic.

I've been quite successful with blending single stage in the past, though I was planning on panel painting it.

When I ground the old cracked filler off I didn't see any trace of primer or sealer under it. You should put some epoxy primer on the area to be filled to seal the bare metal. just my 2 cents.
nobody has noticed the 67 fastback in the background of those pics, I thought for sure Sandy would have spotted that one...

I was too busy examining the McLaren! I was thinking, if I had the $$$, space, time & health to buy every McLaren on e-bay, every one for sale on here, every one in DuPont Registry, every one in Hemmings, I could open an ascMcLaren dealership with a nice showroom, and a big indoor storage/display area....and then promptly starve to death, for lack of sales. Oops, WAKE UP.

Why oh why did I ever fall in love with these cars, that 99.78 percent of the rest of the world doesn't give a Rat's Rump about? 'Ya know, it's not a mer-SAY-deees or nuttin 'pecial.... as has been said to me.
