There is much press and interest in (because of the press) various other converted Mustangs, such as,( but not limited to) vehicles such as the Saleen and over 15 other aftrrmarket convertors. Many of these tend to out shine our asc McLarens in the press and at car shows and trade shows.
But, did you know this:
Ford Motor Company NEVER made a Saleen-requested car built to Saleen's (or any other convertor's) specific requests, as in omitting items that the convertor did not need nor want. No other after-market manufacter ever had a Ford-Issued Sales Code as did ascMcLaren (D32). Other aftermarket venders's cars were bought from a dealership and delivered to the aftermarket company, who, after the cars were completed, had to hire their own transport to deliver the finished car to the ordering dealer - while ascMcLarens came into the selling dealer, all done & ready to go.
Ford made the unique custom glass that went into the doors FOR ascMcLaren converts ! Ford did not make anything for other aftermarket convertors!
Many of the custom-made ascMcLaren specific parts were actually made BY FoMoCo, for the build. (Sun Visors in the Verts, come to mind, as do the window regulators.)
I think that the support and acceptance of FoMoCo should make our cars (Well, the converts at least) more worthy of higher value.
The coupes (Full Packaged at least) Had the B303 cam put in them at Dearborn, rather than Jihnny's Speed Shop. Ford's outsource at the time, for custom panels, was also the company that did the coupes spoilers and ground effects.
Thos of us that bouight new or were lucky to get it from prior owner, will also have a big listing of FORD PARTS specific to the ascMcLaren build, ON FORD INVOICES !!
No other tuners have such. I believe only Carroll Shelby and ascMcLaren hold that destinction.

Sandy,
This is exactly the type of thing we need from you! - Printed Knowledge!
We all say it over and over again: "Most people have never heard of an ascMclaren" Most people I meet think Mclaren means a 200ish hp turbo car. Most people won't take the time to ask and won't believe when told, but if they see it in print..........
I've been wondering/thinkning/pondering, since I bought my 89:
Why/Can/How do we have this great site, a great holder of the "sacred scrolls" (that's you
), and yet no "special" memebership.... I'm a lousy writer, but try to read between the lines. Why is there no documentation we can order from you? I look at a site like the Yellow Mustang Registry and they have all kinds of goodies that you can get celebrating your "special-one-of-a-kind-membership."(I'm not talking the stuff we can buy from Hank) I would love to have some kind of offical-looking document proclaiming "my special" membership to the ascMclaren club w/ "Your" name on it. Heck, if you put some literature together and made a little 20ish, including pictures w/ facts just like those mentioned above, page book together, I'd buy it!........
My rambling comes down to three points:
1.) Documentation - a specialness for the cars
2.) Memebrship - a specialness for the people
The above leads to
3.) Fraternity - a specialness b/w the people
which leads to more than just value to the cars.

I wish blue jeans, old cars, and boots would go out of style.

Hi, How you guys doin' ? I think you are both correct, on the work and detail that went into the making our special cars. But like the step-children we are, our pride and joys, never got the press and hype that Shelby and Saleen got. That only makes me talk tha cars up all the more! Just the look on peoples faces, when you drop the price of the car on them... 24,000 bucks in '86 dollars. After that, some take more notice of them.Just last week, the guy I sold my Crinson Cat to, was asking for some info on our cars, maybe looking to buy one.So I gave him our web sight, and also Hanks.Might be getting a convert. Bless you son! Always room for one more. And YES Sandy, You are such a valueable asset, not only for your knowledge, but you are a "GOOD GUY".
You have to keep in mind: Shelby was primarily a racer, as was Saleen. I don't recall and ASC/McLaren racing team with the cars raced in near showroom configurations.
Each built thousands of cars, in the case of Shelby, many different models, over a very long period of time and was the first.
Had Saleen stopped in 1990, the world would view those cars differently because his greatest successes came later.

When an aftermarket conversion (other than our cars) arrived at a dealership, it came on a flatbed truck, unless a company that was chosen happened to have an older 4,5 or 6 car trailer, bought 2nd or 3rd hand. When a McLaren arrived, it was either on a Ford labeled transport with other FoMoCo (new) products, or on a transport that Ford did business with. The freight was included. On other custom cars the dealer recieved a seperate billing for transportation. When the OTHER brand was in transit, any damage was to be be covered by the owner, but.....what if the owner denied it happened while in his care?
ascMcLarens were insured by Ford Motor Company, until the car was on the ground, and the dealer's represenative signed off on the reciept.
On this very site, you can find SPECIAL PARTS LISTING actually PRINTED on Ford listings, and printed BY Ford. Special Equipment Listing it states up top. No such listing on Ford Paper for Steeda !!
The coupes, too! Recall the up level Capri was the RS and came with grey cloth with red trim? Well does Red & Orange go together? NO!!
So, look at our Coupes! They have the articulating seats - but with matching GREY piping ! (Except for EuroCoupes....)FORD did that FOR ascMcLaren, so that the red piping would not clash with the orange decals.
There are 100s of faster cars, than ours, but very very few so specially made, hand & hand between convertor & OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).
The machine that cut the roofs off the 2358 Verts was custom made + custom designed to do that task.
(That machine has since been destroyed, BTW).
Red is hard to match, To that end, take any 87-90 McLaen with "Scarlet" interior. You see the sew style, the pleats style are totally different than that on a Mustang GT. Yet....the seat color perfectly matchs in color the FORD door panels. The seat covers were not made by the same company, yet, no matter WHAT color the seat covers are, they perfectly match the dash pad & sun visors & door panels!
How did that happen ?????
Ford gave then the dyes !!!!!!
Ford actually made those long deluxe door armrests on your 'Verts and used Lincoln Town Car Door Courtesy lamps with their reflectors, inset into the door armrest. They were in the trunk when the car reached asc McLaren !
Ford is always scared to death over mega billion dollar law suits and you can't fault them for that - but let me tell you that Ford & ascMcLaren worked as closely on these cars as Ben & Jerry work on their ice cream !!
But..... do the UNknowing...........really care???? Naw, they only care 'bout 0-60 time slips...........
McLaren Verts were more a country club curocity, sumpin' different.
They were dressed to impress, not so much as to pace the race mentallity.
((When I am off the Chemo for a few daze I can think straightly again, but I still cannot spell for schitt, Oops, tulips, yes tip toe thru the tulips...)
