1988's for sale...

Came across some interesting cars in my travels... I know absolutely nothing about the cars... just passing it along in case anyone is actively looking.

Currently on ebay there are a pair of rare Mustangs. Item #280473274227 is a burgundy '88 McLaren with an automatic and only 50K miles for $4,400, and item #140386838044 is a gray '88 Saleen with a manual trans and 88K miles. Bidding currently stands at about $7,400. Both are located on the east coast.

That's Black-Cherry Pearl and 1 of 27 so made, in 1988.

Why can't owners leave these cars STOCK ? I'd bet 85% have aftermarket changes on them, mostly not making any improvement
over the original, and why do they toss away the original parts ??

I don't know why people do that. Same way with Vette's. Just have to add non-original crap on them too.

Why was I able to buy 4 Gold McLaren wheels/w tires for $200.00?

Dash plaque number of that Black Cherry Pearl car is #1476, making it not only a very rare color (thanks Sandy!), but apparently one of the very last 88's ever built. Seems like a fair deal to me with those miles... even though it is clearly in need of some 'TLC'...

Why do people incessantly 'mod' cars/trucks/motorcycles/boats/etc.?? Why can't they just be satisfied and leave well enough alone? Simple! Basic human nature for many enthusiasts. They do it to make it feel more 'personalized' and set it apart from everyone elses. Some like to test the outer limits of performance with a 1,000HP engine that'll run 8-second 1/4 mile times. Others spend $35,000 on audio equipment to achieve 158-decibel sound pressure levels with so much bass that it causes the body to distort (seen it in action - crazy!).

In the prior owners eyes, this was probably just another 'old Mustang'. So in this case someone took an exceptionally rare car (doubt they had any clue just how rare) and gave it a few tweaks that to them... looked good. Larger BBS wheels. Big cowl hood. Likely a few bolt-on performance parts on the engine. Aftermarket headlights and taillights. Probably an aftermarket stereo too... can't tell in the photos. To many of us... it's ruined. To them... it's awesome! To each their own.

Let's face it - No one ever accused the general public of having good aesthetic taste.

But they sure do contribute a lot of $$$ to the well being of 1,000's of companies out there worldwide. I know it's painful, but the next time you see a highly modded car out on the road that makes you want to immediately projectile vomit all over your windshield... just choke it back... and think of it as... economic stimulus for the country.

I do not see as much of that crap being done to Saleens, nor others turing out similiar product to Saleens AS I see being done to ascMcLarens.
Just on visuals, that Black Cherry Pearl car needs OEM tailights, OEM headlights, a hood, front fascia, driver leather seat covering and a total repaint. Probably has cracked A-Post covers and a non-original style convertible top. To do it right, and be in it for not too much over what it would bring, should you wanna sell it, it needs to sell for $1,800, and no more. If ya HAVE to change the looks of a car, in order to buy it...just don't buy it. Buy something you like enough to leave it alone.
BTW, it is the 1st Black-Cherry example that I have ever seen.
(Still looking for that 1 Regal Red-Fox Metallic and that 1 Alpine Green Metallic example.)

It's still there, it just doesn't say McLaren in the title. Use the auction number from the initial post as your search criteria and you'll find it.
