How about yours, AND why is this?

Post by Sandy »

Went over to "Car-Condo" today to vist a couple of my "kids". Playing around with "Hi-Ho-Silver" (the Silver Anniversary 1990) while she was running, I found something that I thought was broken. The passenger's seat BACK, when put back in its normal seating position will "lock" in place, so that upon a monester application of the brake, the seat-back will not fall forward. Well, in Hi Ho Silver it locks on the passenger's side, but NOT on the driver's side !!
So later I head home and check out the Azura Blue one. Same thing, she does not lock on either side.

Now then, I know the reason why it was mandatory that both seats (under law) were mandated to be this way. Reason was, in a 2=door car with people in the back seat, not belted in, in a severe rear end crash, those persons can be thrust forward with great force, crushing the driver & front seat passenger and/or propelling them into the dashboard or windshield. Hopefully, the locked in place seat-back would stop them.

Did asc/McLaren disable these because it was to be a 2-seater, or did FoMoCo not install it ?? (For that reason).

Go to your 1987-1990 & fold forward either yor passenger OR driver OR BOTH seats. At the bottom or the back of the seat, on the side closest to the door, you will see a small black plastic lift - type release handle.
See it yours actually works. When you fold back the seat, it SHOULD lock into postion, and you should have to reach down & lift that little black plastic soft lever to release the seatback.
Check both sides to see if either seat-back LOCKS and cannot be titled forward without lifting the lever. My Siver 'verts locks on the passenger sise only, and my Blue one does not lock on either side.

Seat backs that do not lock

Post by capri50asc »

Sandy

This is true! My '86 Capri RS seats never locked. If I hit the brakes hard to stop, The the passenger side seat will fold forward if their is no passenger in the seat. What I do is pull the seat belt. Lock it so it does not move forward. I have owned this Capri for almost 19 years . I could never fix it
and I knew that both seats never worked.

Okay - but with zero use.... why would mine break ?

My hunch has something to do with GT seats installed into a LX.
Or...
The ascmcLaren leather covering does not mesh with the striker or the stationary horizontal steel bar that the ratchit goes over and is meant to "click" onto.

OK, so I went out and checked the '89-both do NOT lock. Then I thought I'd check the '85 GT I bought new (27K orig miles). Both don't lock. If I remember, I asked the dealer when I picked up the '85 new, why do they have locks if you can flip it forward? "Inertia locks like seat belts". I guess it makes sense.

No!! Has nothing to do with Inertia locking.
It has to do with the fact that something does not line-up.
The passenger side on the Silver Anniversary has a different "feel"
-- as in it just fits!

I know what happened -but do not know how to fix.

Remember, the cars arrived at ascMcLaren with GT CLOTH articulating seats.
The seats were removed from the car at ASC, and recovered with the covers on your 87 88 89 or 90. In order to do this, the back-rest & the seat had to be seperated. SOMEWHERE in this project, something was
*omitted
* broken
* not replaced
* not alligned (me thinks it's this reason).

All 4 ratchit lifts work on my 2 'Verts. The steel bar is there, attached to the seat's side and is not bent. The ratchet just cannot "grab" onto the bar. I cannot see if goes too far back (beyond) -OR- not back enough.
All 4 spring loaded ratchets work! The steel bar, protruding from the seat's side are all there. They just do not line up enough for thr spring loaded ratchet to grab the bar. (Well, 1 of 4 does.)
They are manual, no Inertia, Fold back the seat-back, and the ratchet should click over the bar, & lock. To fold seatback forward, one would have to reach down and manually lift the plastic release on the backside bottom of the seat, while tilting the seat-back forward.

My 1975 Imperial 2-Dr. Hardtop did all of this automatically, via a selinoid. Only coupe that I ever saw, that did it automatically.

I have heard that the passenger seat is inertia activated as well. Somebody with a low mileage car, take it out and slam on the brakes, please?

No, No. Inertia in this case would be impact from behind.
To that I slightly tilted the seatback forward, still it did NOT click & lock.

I am surprised that the non asc McLaren car, above, did not lock either.
I wanna go test the COUPE. but I cannot get to her until April 1st

The Recaro seats lock. Positively. You have to lift a lever to get them to move forward at all.

Rear impact wouldn't make sense. The seat doesn't need to lock in that case.

Frontal impact or slamming on the brakes would require the seat to lock so that the rear passengers don't fly forward and crush the passenger.

Okay I agree....BUT if a car behind does not realize the Capri is stopped, and there are 2 people in the rear seat, and the car comes up upon them at 30 MPH and makes contact at that speed, WHY would the 2 people in the back seat NOT be thrust forward, into (or onto) the backs of thr front seats??

Inertia Seat Release

Post by capri50asc »

I pulled out my 1986 Ford/Mercury Shop manual on page 41-30-1

Here's what it says:

Inertia: With the inertia seat back system, the seat back is folded forward for rear entry or exit by simply pushing the seat back forward. The Inertia latch assembly remains unlocked with NORMAL usage. it locks only only during vehicle deceleration (emergency stopping or upon impact) or on steep downhill grades. A manual (override) release handle is provided ONLY
to facilitate unlocking of the latch in the event of latch lockup on steep downhill grades or severe vehicle altitude changes as a result of an accident. Well mine are broken!

The two people will be thrust towards the back and not forward in a rear impact. (I'm talking about the car in front)

A body at rest wants to remain at rest. When a car strikes another from behind it thrusts the car forward, but the people in the car want to remain in their position relative to the road. In a way the rear of the car is shoved into their backs. If you were in the car, it looks like the person is thrown backwards.

Same thing for hard acceleration. You're trying to launch the car out from under you so you get shoved into the seat...not forward.

Now, just to cover all the basis...

If you we're talking about the car behind...

The car behind, is having a front impact. The people in that car would get thrown forward (relative to the insides of the car).

The car in front is having a rear impact and the people are being thrown backwards (relative to the insides of the car).
