Real??? Found a 1982 Black M81 5.0 McLaren is it Real???
How do I tell if this car is the real deal or a copy?
I have located what I believe to be a Black (original color) 1982 M81, with what looks to be the original 5.0 four barrel engine backed by what appears to be the original 4 speed Ford top loader transmission with 4th gear being overdrive. I have been told that this is the third owner. I was also told that the first owner only signed it over to the second owner in a divorce settlement, to his now x-wife. I am waiting on a copy of the title and documentation. I need to verify as much as possible about this car before I buy it. It may be expensive to buy, so I need to be sure. Any and all information you can give me about this car will be helpful. As you must know, information on these cars is scarce. If it is a genuine M81 or GT Enduro, I can’t let it slip thru my fingers.

Here are a couple of articles that should help you decide whether the 5.0 that you are talking about is an authentic M81 McLaren or GT Enduro, or neither!richonetex wrote:How do I tell if this car is the real deal or a copy?

Keep in mind all the parts and pieces were available from Ford for a time. I once saw an ad for a Mustang that had the M81 stuff but was a V6. Wish I had called on it.
Get some pics and post them up for us to see.

M81
I own the white #9 M81. There was a black one #8, last seen in Italy. All the m81's were turbo 4's. The m81's are 1980's.

Hi, Saw the action here on the M81's. Well was at a car show two weeks ago, before the big snow, and tucked back out fo the way,was an 82 GT Enduro. Man is that car NICE !!! It was the real deal . This was the blue one. The car is for sale, and it it listed in Hemmings. There was no one around it,to talk with. Not that I didn't hang around, and around and around ! Boy, would I love to see that one in my garage. But it's only money. The owner is from Malvern, Pa. So just wanted to toss that info in.

If they would build any kind of a bubbleback capri, that would be great.ChuckG wrote:I still have the Revell model, unbuilt!
I tried to convince GMP to do the McLaren cars when they released the mid-80s Mustangs, but no dice. Live to have a diecast '85 ASC Coupe in my collection!

Not to mention the castor/camber plates, strut tower brace, engine fan, silicone hoses and other stuff I may have missed. But I will cut him some slack on the taillights. I talked to him on the phone a few years back when I first saw it for sale and he told me that when he bought it that it had an '83 nose on it. If you look at the period picture in his ad with it on the period Ford transporter it has the '83 taillights as well. I'd bet Ford put those taillights on it and he never changed them back out when he put it back to it's original configuration.1985 Motorsport Capri wrote:Did anyone notice it has 83 - 86 taillights?
kinda blows the whole "original unrestored condition" quote.
Here's a pic of the '83 nose:
