Need Help With Dew Wipes - 85

Post by CocoLoco »

Hi All - I am proceding on my efforts here. I took off the drivers door panel in an effort to replace the deteriorated dew wipes. I purchased stardard Ford dew wpies as suggested.

Each side has 2 pieces - a metal trim cover (black) and a metal/rubber piece which is the actual dew wipe. The dew wipe appears to be the exact legth needed. I don't think I need the cover as the existing ones are on the car and painted red (car color).

The dew wipes have several (5-6) metal clips along the bottom at even intervals.

My problem is I cannot figure out how to remove the old ones. The window only goes down to about 1/4" above the dew wipe, so access is tough. It looks like they could just pull up and off but I am not sure.

Anybody tackled this before ? Any help greatly appreciated.

Also - I am going to replace the end rubber piece at the lock end of the dew wipe. I have the Ford parts for these and they look like they will fit OK.

Thnaks in advance - Dwight

I haven't changed these on 79 and up mustangs, I change them at least one a week at work on classic mustangs and with those you have to drop the window all the way down in the door.

The mirror must be removed...under the mirror there might be a screw holding that edge of the metal dew wipe on...neither of my cars had that screw but I know some do.

Once that screw is removed you'll simply lift up on the metal. Those clips are very snug but it will pop up and off. Play with it but be careful not to bend anything. You might be able to use a long Flathead or something to pry but again be careful not to bend or scratch anything...

Good luck.

Dew Wipe

Post by svo413 »

The vert. has an extra trim piece at the rear of the door. The little wedge piece needs to be removed first (2 screws). One screw is visible at the rear of the door thru the dew wipe and the front one is hidden. I believe they were button head, allen (small) head screws. Once the trim is off the dew wipe can be removed and them seperated from the painted metal strip. There is no need to use Ford parts for this since the new rubber is a great replacement and the metal is not reused.

Be careful when prying/lifting up - if you start at the rear of the door and work forward, you could angle the metal piece enough that the front tip scratches the paint below the mirror. Work along the entire length as best you can.

No. No. No. ..... My bad. Should have said that up front. But I think a lot of what you wrote still applies. I think it will be a lot easier to work on it if I take off the mirror, the trim piece and tape up all the painted parts. I may replace anyhting under the mirror and up the door frame as well. I want to do this once and do it right!! As for the wipe itself, it looks like it just pops off like you said. Thanks for your input.
