Need some help

My '86 coupe needs some help. How have others tackled this problem.

I went to see & start my Coupe, this beautiful 66 degree day here in Jersey. Oh, she's fine, except for one small detail.

She's an automatic tranny car, 1 of 9. Where the shifter enters the quadrant (vertical) like:-
P
R
N
DR
DR-2
L

there is a slot, vertical, that the shifter (NOT the "T" handle - but the actual "stick" or shift lever) enters INTO the vertical slot, both sides of that slot have a flexable black piece of thin rubber. The purpose is to keep out dust, and I guess to keep things from falling in there....

Okay, mine has decided to check out by literally disentragating. Pieces (parts) of it are still there, but most of it (I guess from over the summer's heat and age - 19 years) is gone.

Looking with flashlite (in dark garage) it looks like it attaches to the underside of the quardant.

Who knows what about this? IF I could get a piece of 1/4 inch thick FELT with a peel 'n stick backing, I could cut 2 strips to fit & get it in there - but I have no clue who would have one sided 1/4 inch felt with a sticky backing.

NOT SURE IF THESE ARE IN REPRO YET? MAYBY YOU CAN FIND A NOS ONE I WOULD ON THAT ONE!

Sandy, this is a COMMON problem for auto car owners.

You are the THIRD person to complain about this recently.

The fact that YOUR low mileage car with the super humidity/temperature controlled environement had this problem makes me think that there will be NO used pieces worth hunting down.

It SHOULD be on the list for repros. I have not had an auto shifter apart to see what could be done. Is it rubber or felt? Whatever the material, go hunt some down. Now you just need adhesive right? Why does it have to be pre applied? Apply it yourself!

Get some GOOP! Goop is AWESOME at binding two dissimilar materials together. It is the absolute BEST thing for fixing SHOES! The best thing is, it is like a super strong rubber cement, so if you need to remove the felt in the future, the goop could be pulled off from the shifter bezel with no damage. Unlike super glue or something that may penetrate and ruing the finish if you remove it. Use it sparingly as too much will make a mess...which is no big deal with goop, you just pull off the felt and the goop and start over.

That small piece I think can be had if you buy a WHOLE NOS shifter bezel from Ford. If you really want, call your Ford dealer, get the part number and have him do a nationwide search to see what he finds. Send the number to me and I will check with a few people too. However, there is no guarantee that those pieces won't have the same problem

Is this the same shifter bezel?

It has an 86 part number but the guy says its for a 79 without console.

No, the part herein shown on e bay is different. It would be that flat piece witht he little clear plastic window withthe P R N D (etc) letters. But mine is arched ^ and that one is flat.

I wrote to Jim Dingell in Virginia Mustang Parts and am awaiting a reply, I am sure he has it (I hope) I'll have to buy the whole piece, but that's okay....

It's 2 pieces of RUBBER. One per side, closing the opening of the vertical space that the shifter travels back & forth in. Each side actually looks like a windshield wiper rubber blade. I actually need the black plastic piece witht he P R N D D1 D2 and THAT would have it attached.

nice item on the bay but i think sandys car has od and that does not look like that one has that for 79 model and sandy make sure the one you get has the od on bezel

I have a sickening feeling that every road is gonna lead to a dead end. I looked at my brochures. The 1987 & 1988 Mustang uses the same. In the 1989 theres no pic. My 2 1990 Mustang McLaren DO NOT use the same. After 1988 it changes, but I cannot tell if the change took place in 88 or 89 In the 90 it's definatly changed. Regardless, they are all old. At best IF IF IF the 1988 is STILL 17 years old. My experience with mydealer is that they will not even look it up in Parts Dept.

It looks so much like a windshield wiper blade, I may just buy one blade and cut it to fit & attach with a little stretched out piece of buytel tape on theback side. (1 on each side) I think it will look identical to OEM.

Sandy, you need to find a new Ford dealer. The Ford dealer here is great, they look up everything for me...even over the phone.

If you can get the part number of the whole bezel, I think we could track one down. MANY 1987-90 parts are STILL WIDELY available!

If you can get an 87-90 bezel, you could move over the seal to your car and sell the bezel on ebay. Somebody will buy it.

Ask them which is bigger...and try that...

Short of that, I think you will need to track down some NOS stuff. Get the part number...it will be for the bezel, I really doubt Ford ever serviced just the seal so I don't think you'll find a part number for the seal.

I have tracked down almost everything I have hunted for....this shouldn't be too too tough.

So, it's the wrong part #. (For 1987 +) This one was used 1984/85& 86 Capri & Mustang Automatics.

Yes, the E7 number is wrong. The E4 number I gave you should be correct!

And you are right E4 = 84 so they made the bezel in 84 and used the same one through 86 and switched it in 87 and used the E7=87 part number.
