Headliner for convertible

Post by knsstang »

Did the 87-90 Mclarens come with a headliner for the top? My friend Eddie has one in his 89 and I was wondering if mine has been removed

I have never seen one with. I do know that it was definately NOT an ascMcLaren option. What I don't understand is that withOUT a headliner, the convertible top & frame and padding barely make it into the cavity that they fold into when putting the top down. I can't imagine how the heck they'd ever fit with a headliner going down in there, too !

Ford added the headliners to the factory tops in the late 80s. They can be added to any factory top. McLaren's probably probably never made the change.

He has a headliner in his asc. it's black and the installation is clean, so it looks as though it came from asc that way. that's why I was wondering. and it also still fits under the tonnue cover with no problem of clearence.

You can probably make one really easy with some headliner from an auto store and spray on glue that they use to apply it. Just trim away and it would look awesome. I was going to do this but its not original so I changed my mind on messy glue that would be left behind if I took it back out. Good Luck!

Holy Crap ! I called my ascMcLaren contact to inquire. He tells me that 35 cars were so equipped. asc was going to make it an option at $175.00 MSRLP $131.00 dealer invoice, but there was a problem with the supplier and the people at asc were not sure the volume would be there to offset cost. An initial 35 of the liners were ordered & delivered. He seemed to recall that not all were installed as they said it was a "bear of a job to get them in correctly and they experienced some ripping & pulling loose of the headliners with the little use (tests) they gave it. The idea was shelved. He says there may be 20-25 such cars "out there" ~

I bet over the years I had spoken to some who had it - - but just thought that it was "normal" and never thought to mention it !! (and Inever heard of it, so I never thought to inquire).

You've got something special, there. What's you dash plaque # ?? ??
It was probably going to be a "new feature" for 1989.......
