Like last year's Flu, it's back ?? Whooo Hooo, I'll cash in my $20,000 Bond and send an 18-wheeler down to Hank and tell him to "fill 'er up" and with any luck & $25,000 I'll have a remo bomb.

Maybe I am just getting grumpy in my old age, but I now refuse to read anything that is in ALL CAPS. If a writer cannot take the time to type something that is easily read, then I will not spend my time trying to interpret it.

I think we have identified a problem, while every transaction I have had with Hank has been a good one. He has a monopoly on parts, therefore driving the price to restore a ASC Mclaren to levels that are above the value of the car.Sandy wrote:Like last year's Flu, it's back ?? So what happens the driveline gets pulled out and stuck in a 4 cylinder Mustang.
So as enthusiast what can we do? Our goal is preserve the cars right?
I am open for suggestions.

Dave I agree but it's hard to do when this guy wants to open the bid at that price...I was saying earlier that it would cost more to ship to me than the car is worth! Also as mentioned above the battery tray rust is very scary...I heard a story one time about an 85 GT's front end literally falling off because of that very same problem...svt1996cobra wrote:I think we have identified a problem, while every transaction I have had with Hank has been a good one. I don't blame Hank's monopoly for the problem. Actually I find the prices for his poarts extremely reasonable for what they are. I just blame the low values these cars have.
If a decently restored asc coupe (new parts, ground effects, paint, etc) could pull a solid $8k or more, like it SHOULD, then obviously cars like this would be snagged and restored.
$2500 for a shell of a rare Muscle Car (in the low hundreds) is nothing. So why is a car like that still worth only $500 in the shape it's in?
I agree, it's very frustrating.

Hank's prices are not "over the top" ~ but they also are not cheap. They are fine if you need a few pieces to bring a car that's 85% all there, to concours condition but on a total restoration ~ PLUS many many many FoMoCo parts, the finished car is going to never ever be worth the investment, in both effort, time & monies spent! EVEN if Hank were to send everypiece this car needs free of charge, you'd still be way over the worth, in FoMoCo seats, headliner, mechanicals, body rust repair, mechanicals, electrical, etc, etc.
It's not a smart or prudent "buy" ~

My take on this is if you got this one and kept it for future value of what they may do i feel it is a good investment for around 1500 to 1700. I just bought a very hard to find 1 owner 82 GT but it needs quite a bit of tlc however in stock unmolested cond and full i mean full "Sandy type documentation"negusm wrote:

Mclaren
I think Mike Martinelli, has made a very good point. Most of us park our cars in the garage or barn, get them out for a Sunday cruise, then put them back in the garage. What we need to do is get the cars out and about, let them be seen. ( Which Mike does well).
The value will not go up, unless the general public has a desire to own one, most people don't even know what a ASC Mclaren is.
Let's have some sort of reunion, it's worked well for the SVOOCA, have a get together meet other ASC Mclaren owners, talk cars, cruise, have dinner, shoot the breeze.
I think it is great to have the Forum , but let's do more.

Re: Mclaren
The biggest thing against these cars is the no additional performance factor. They are really nice looking cars to most but all show no go hurts. Some examples. What gets more a California Special or a Shelby? The C/S is actually much rarer but little more then a cosmetic package. Shelby had added performance and a racing heritage. Saleen was doing really bad until they added more power to their cars then they literally started to take off pun intended. Although Saleen didnt have their own special vin indentifier they had a much better suspension and braking package along with the cosmetics. Come to think of it ASC also made a Camaro/ Firebird convertible similar to our cars but much rarer I wonder how that is going to do too in the long run. I would say a Macho Trans Am would do far better then the same make vert in comparison cause of the performance. If you want a Musclecar to be exceptional you must remember its heritage as a performer and then seperate itself from the rest. Another key point is that the market is saterated with specialty vehicles of all shapes, sizes, both foriegn and domestic.svt1996cobra wrote:I think Mike Martinelli, has made a very good point. In conclusion I always loved these cars, the first thing I did to mine was add a supercharger though lol. If you want an investment talk to a financial manager and you will see nothing is a sure thing and that goes true in our market too. Own this car cause you want too.

I agree, had ASC Mclaren formed a race team in 84 or 85 and used the Capri in a production class, things may be different! But heck look at what Roush did! That did not seem to help the Capri! Who knows?
Cougars are not valued close to their Mustang counterparts. I guess as a Cougar/Capri owner, we will have to realize the cars will not reach the value of their Mustang counterparts. As far as the 87-90 Convertibles, I think you are right, they are viewed as modified Mustangs, with parts that are expensive to replace, with no hint of performance added.
We'll just have to enjoy the cars! That is why I have mine.
So who wants to have a Mclaren get together this summer?

I'm up for a get together...Not sure how close all you guys are but check this out...it's always a good time...and there won't be any import stuff there...PLUS it's for a good cause...svt1996cobra wrote:I agree, had ASC Mclaren formed a race team in 84 or 85 and used the Capri in a production class, things may be different! It would be cool to have a little ascMcLaren section...I know the guy running it (known him for years) and I can get us a spot reserved inside if we wanted to have a section for our cars...
