Well I've started now...

Post by ckj »

I've had a bunch of bad luck with my car, so I finally have broken down.

- No 2nd gear in the tranny
- No Ac - doesn't hold pressure on Hi side
- Rough idle, rubber vacuum hoses dry rotted
- leaking antifreeze from water pump
- valve covers leaking oil, 3 inches of oil residue built up on back of engine
- Smog hoses broken
- EGR? tube on back of engine connected to headers rusted out
- motor mounts dry rotted
- Paint has runs, dirt and is not fixable
- etc etc etc

After deciding to replace the tranny with a heavy duty T5Z, I ran into all kinds of problems. I kept finding more and more things that were broken, or in need of replacement. Enough... It's all coming out and I'm going to get everything up to snuff. It's absolutely absurd to have a completely original car with worn out parts, that isn't safe to drive. I'll keep all of the parts and maybe when I'm old and in AARP i'll restore the car back to stock, but I've decided I'm going to enjoy it.

Now the tranny is out, exhaust is off, headers off, AC system is off, engine is about ready to come out.. I've found out why the front end sits cockeyed, the radiator support is damaged and the front end is twisted. I guess that will all have to be repaired or replaced as well before it's repainted. I'm not a rich man and spent all my money to buy the car. It's going to take me a few years to work my way through this, but I guarantee it will be nice.

Here are a few pics of my progress so far.

It truly is wonderful to be young.
If you were my age, you'd part it out and junk the rest,
and go order a new car.
The energy and drive are totally gone once ya pass age 59,
Trust me on that! Taking out the garbage is a chore !! !!

I do wish you well and the time, money & good health to
complete the car.

Keep on working, you'll have it done before you know it... erm... wait on that, seems I've been "working" on my 442 for 13 years... well, think of all the cool thing you can do to it!

If I were to modify one, I think I would:

-Go with better brakes. There are a myriad of kits out there to give it good stopping power.

-Add Maximum Motorsports K member and Strut tower braces.

-Upgrade the interior. (let's face it, asc didn't do a great job here)

-Make a hardtop. (oh wait, I AM doing that one)

-Weld up all of the 10,000 holes in the engine bay that aren't used.

-Install a Cobra IRS. Yes, I know they aren't the best for racing, but you don't own an asc/McLaren to race it anyway. What they do accomplish is better handling and ride in a street car.

Well, now that I have spent all of your money I will go back to my regularly scheduled life! =-)

Just remember its a hobby not work. Once you cross that line you will never be happy. I lost allot of steem with my '88 ASC after the incident I had with a body shop, but that was my fault I let it get to me. These cars are meant to be enjoyed whether it is looking at it as eye candy or driving. You are going to be blessed with a greater understanding of your car and these cars in general, take pride in something you will become good at knowing you built it. We have a nice group of people here that we all network with. Were are you located? Perhaps some one can give you a hand and in return you can help them? If not we can share our knowledge, affordable parts to one another when available, inspiration, etc...

Thanks for the kind words. I'm in no rush to get this done and will take my sweet time. There is no deadline, no pressure. When I feel like working on it I do and it's very enjoyable. I've gotten quite a bit done in the last few weeks taking my sweet time. I'll post some more pictures later on, and I owe negusm info from my cam. To be honest if it takes 3 years I'm fine with that! :)

Great advice!!! Oh, and not to get too philosophical, but this advice applies to so many things other than working on an asc. I am building a landscaping wall next to my driveway, and I work on it in short bursts. I refuse to push myself to "get it done," and I am having a blast!
