I loved the 70's Cougars w/ the 351 Cleveland.
I loved the 80's Capries w/ the 5.0s. (Esp Sandy's Gray and Orange! )
But what have the done w/ the brand since? The 90's Cougar sucked, and that's being nice.

Let's face it. Lincoln's and Mercs ain't what they used to be.
Sorry if i'm being insensitive, but no car company can make crap for 20 years and stay in bussiness.

Clear your minds and listen to Sandy

This is horrible. FomoCo should invested more $$$ and brought out some HOT cars, and moved MercuryS up line, and made them different from Fords. I blame Ford.
But, to kill it, I again blame Ford. Look - here is the present AMERICAN Automobile choices:

GM

Cadillac, Buick &Chevrolet = 3

CHRYSLER

Chrysler, Dodge, & Jeep = 3

FORD

Lincoln & Ford = 2

How the hell can WE compete with just 8 brands ???

Do you know how many FOREIGN BRANDS are SOLD here?

THIRTY ONE !!!!

Imagine a baseball team with 8 players -VS- a team with 31 players. Whom are you betting on ??

This (to me) signals the coming end of the American Automobile Industry !

Whom have we lost ?????? Lest we forget ????

Imperial & Plymouth from Chrysler Corp.
Oldsmobile, Pontiac & Saturn from GM
Mercury from Ford

This all just since 1993 !

Answer this question = How will dealers survive on just LINCOLN ????

There is now a dark cloud over all Lincoln Dealers.

You all are witnessing & living through the end of the American Automobile Industry.
I will probably not be around to witness it, but it will come to pass.

We cannot compete with a mere 8 brands. Sorry

Sandy,

How acurate was the movie Tucker?
That really is how is see the auto industry.

Besides, doesn't Ford own Volvo, Mazda, and Land Rover?

My 99 Mitsubishi's engine came from a Chrysler Seabring. The car industry ain't about America vs Japan, vs German, vs English, vs Korea even if that's what they might want you to think. They are all in bed together. Taxes import/domestic that is why they try to maintain the illusion of American car.

Sad day on the News

Sad day,

Mercury will be dropped from the Ford line up. I remember my father bring home a '65 Mercury Parklane with the"breezeway rear Window" I enjoyed sitting in the back seat with the rear window down in the pouring rain, and not one drop coming in the car! Here is a list of the Mercury's I have owned:

1973 Cougar XR-7 Blue on Blue
1973 Cougar XR-7 Copper with ginger int
1973 Couger XR-7 Convert, Red with a white int
1973 Cougar standard white on white (still own this one)
1973 Cougar standard blue on blue (scrapped)
1975 Cougar XR-7 green with white int
1981 Capri RS
1981 Lynx
1986 Capri RS (still own this one)
1986 Capri 'vert #0082 (still own this one)
and
1972 Montego GT 351 Q Code Ram air ( I wish I had bought this one!)

This guy pretty much gets his stories straight from Ford press releases, so it must be a very solid plan.

Chris, I did not see that movie, so I cannot comment.

Volvo was sold several months ago to GEELEY of China. GEELEY now owns Volvo.

Ford owns a piece of Mazda. I am not sure on Range/Land Rover, as to whom owns what share of that British corporation.

Point is, with these multi-ownership corporations, in which the USA in involved, the PROFITS leave America and go back to the other countries. Some do offer jobs to American workers, pay taxes to America, supply jobs to Americans, etc. etc.....I acknowledge this.
I am speaking of when all is said/done....the PROFIT(s) thereof, leave the USA, making the foreign corporation stronger, and the American competitor(s) weaker.

Here's how the "Ballfield" looks:--

USA
Chevrolet
Buick
Cadillac
Chrysler
Dodge
Jeep
Lincoln
Ford Total = 8

Foreignors
Acura
BMW
Honda
Hyundai
Infiniti
Mazda
Jaguar
Kia
Lexus
Mercredes-Benz
Mini
Mitsubishi
Nissan
Porsche
Saab
Subaru
Smart Car
Toyota
Volkswagon
Audi

I have omitted the exotics, such as Maserati, Ferrari, Lamboghini, Lotus, Bentley, Rolls Royce, and a couple others, for obvious reasons.

As I mentioned, above, just since 1993, we have lost these brands
(Divisions of American Corps.)

Imperial & Plymouth from Chrysler Corp.
Oldsmobile, Pontiac & Saturn from GM

Mercury will be #6. Six in 16 years !!!

I agree, I think Ford could've been successful with Mercury, I have to say, I see a HIGH number of late model Mercurys on the road on my long commute. Milans and Mariners are everywhere. I don't understand why Ford didn't give Mercury a variant of the Focus (a very successful car) and for God's sake, give Mercury an "excitement" vehicle to get more people into showrooms! some kind of performance oriented car!

About the end of the American Car industry, I don't think it will completely die, but unfortunately for the last 20 years they've had to endure unwarranted and BS claims that have become a stereotype of American cars aren't as good as Japanese/korean cars (lets be honest, its jap/korean cars taking over - european cars aren't taking THAT huge of a chunk of the market). Many "drive-by" auto mags like C&D, MT, and others continually will not let the American auto Manufacturers get past the horrible years of 75-85 when there were some legimate quality issues.

The newest laughable thing I've seen C&D/Mtrtrd do is in their occasional performance/muscle/sporty car comparos is try to lump in the Hyundai Tiburon in with the Mustangs/Camaros/Challengers. riiiiiiight

Hyundai will certainly beat the Aged, Live axle Mustang, and the tough hood-type street-wise crime-minded Camaro type, with Hyundai(s) superior ash tray location, A/C Vent location and easy fill fuel tank, to tske the Car & Driver award ! No contest there ! :smash:
