Just what I've seen regarding the rear ratios...
My 86 AOD McLaren also had the 3.27's spec'd on the door build
sticker. The 3.27's were the optional performance ratio from Ford for
automatic cars only. The 2.73's were standard in both auto's and 5spd
cars (non-Mclaren 5.0's), with the 3.08 being optional for the 5spd
and 3.27's for the automatic (In regards to 86-92 5.0's). The
automatic has a much lower numerical 1st gear than a 5spd and the
3.27 helps dramatically over the 2.73 gear. The 2.73 gear automatic
5.0's are pretty poky off the line. My old 88 McLaren 5spd had the
3.08 gear spec'd on it's door sticker as well. If they did make a
3.73 gear McLaren automatic, it would be a real snappy performer-
would have been a great idea with the AOD as it even has a lower
(numerically ) top gear overdrive than the 5spd stick and would make
the 3.73's acceptable at highway speeds.
