One thought struck me as I was thinking about 'how would I put a roll bar' into my 88 McLaren convertible... and that was a flashback to my days with Triumph TR6's and TR4s.
For the Triumph's we had a number of chrome, flat black and even leather wrapped roll bars. They varied in style from two point bars for driver alone ( which had two attaching points on the floor and provided an upside down U shape behind the driver only ) and the two point bars for driver and passenger ( which had two attaching points on the floor and provided a stretched upside down U that went from the drivers side over to the passenger side of the car ). The particularly interesting thing about both of these particular roll bars is that they only needed to be attached to the floor immediately behind the seats ( which is roughly the same amount of room that we have to work with in the McLaren convertibles.
The Triumphs also had four point roll bars - in the above styles, with two attachments on the floorboards behind the seats and two attachments that went onto the faux backseat area ( which is similar to the McLaren's faux backseat ( but there would be problems with this particular fitting as it would require modification to the 'storage box' that serves as the 'faux backseat' in the convertibles.
Lastly, the Triumphs had a six point cage - with two attachments to the floor behind the seat, two attachments to the faux backseat area and two attachments UNDER the seats and near the door. This model would be a particularly annoying model to try to install.
So thinking back over the Triumph roll bar configurations, I would assume that a two point roll bar, going behind the seats would probably be the easiest to install in the convertible without having to modify the rear faux backseat.
Ultimately, the other options would be to find a two point roll bar designed for a Mustang convertible of the appropriate year model.
But at least I have hopefully opened your eyes to another potential resource for roll bars that might work within the confines of the McLaren's back areas.
