The red ones are beautiful. When I first saw the McLaren's in '84, there was a red one(#4) and a black one(#2) on the showroom floor. Although the red was my favorite, I felt I couldn't afford to own it(lead foot). So I ended up, despite wifely protests, with #2.
On the message board, is a poster by the name of cigarsandy, real name, Sandy Block. He lives in NJ and is very nice. He has followed the car from it's inception, and now owns 3. He maintains the registry, and also knows ALL there is to know about these cars.
If a good non abrasive polishing compound and wax doesn't bring back the red, Sandy can tell you the color codes to get the exact original paint. (You might find him enough of a resource that you might send him a box of cigars for his efforts).

Just found this group. My wife bought 1988 red convertible #787 new
in 1988 and we still own it. 66K miles, in outstanding condition
except for the plastic trim pieces around the windshield, doors, and
rearview mirrors. These parts have faded to a pinkish red. Is there
any way to fix this other than having a body shop paint them? Also,
the seat belts never seem to retract correctly. I always feel like
if I have an accident, I'm going to get thrown throught the
windshield. Does anyone know if stock inertia reels for the 88
mustang convertible will work in this car?
