Subject: Weatherstripping - Build up a little information for the future

Body:
I was wondering about the topic of weatherstripping also...

The trunk weatherstripping is the same as the Mustang LX Coupe or convertible.

For a hardtop McLaren Capri the door weatherstripping is the same as the Capri
for that year.

However, when we get into the McLaren convertibles there is a fair bit of
difference.

I will break my question down into the most obvious components that will
require replacement at
some point by owners of our cars :

For the purposes of this question, my interest is the 88 McLaren convertible
naturally... but if
you have answers that relate to the other model years or body styles then any
input the users of
this group could contribute might prove useful for future reference by other
owners.

I guess where all these questions are leading is this : There are two common
types of door seal
weatherstrips available for the Mustang. There is commonly available door
weatherstripping for
the Mustang Coupe/Fastback and there is commonly available door
weatherstripping for the Mustang
convertible. It would help everyone to know if any of these parts can be used
or modified to
serve our McLarens. Or maybe the answer is even simpler and there are 'off
the shelf'
weatherstripping ( like those sold at PepBoys ) that can be pressed into
service and used on the
McLaren convertibles.

I have identified four areas on the McLaren doors and windshield that are of
concern. If anyone
has any input related to their specific model of McLaren, they could provide
their pearls of
wisdom here and it will be safely archived in the group for ease of future
reference :

Take for example the piece of rubber that runs up the pillar and that the for
of the window
presses against.
Is that particular piece unique to the McLaren or is it a modified LX Coupe
part ?Next, take for example the section of weatherstripping that is attached to the
ragtop door pillar
frame and that the rear of the window presses against for a seal.
Is that particular piece unique to the McLaren or is it a modified LX Coupe
part ?Next, take for example the section of weatherstripping that is attached to the
top of the ragtop
frame and that the top of the window presses against for a seal.
Is that a particular piece unique to the McLaren or is it a modified LX Coupe
part ?Lastly and probably the most important piece of weatherstripping ( for the
convertibles only ) is
the piece that runs across the top of the windshield and seals the waters from
working its way in
through where the rag top attaches to top of the windshield frame.
Is that a particular piece unique to the McLaren or did it possibly come from
the standard issue
Mustang convertible. The reason I raise this hunt for information is simple. In the long run it
saves everyone time
and money if there are alternative pieces or products that we can use that will
serve their
intended purpose. The example I could give to you is this : Back in the days
when I had dropped
a turbo-charged V6 engine into a Triumph TR4A, I constantly was breaking U
joints on the
driveshaft. The Triumph U joints were never designed to handle 270 horsepower.
After replacing
about 10 sets of shattered U joints one of my friends told me to put a Datsun (
Nissan to you
folks ) 240 Z U joint on the driveshaft. Well, low and behold the 240 Z U
joint was not only
stronger - but it cost 1/3 the price of the Triumph/British Leyland/Standard
part.__________________________________________________
