im sure some people will not appreciate the way i chose to change
the car from stock, but you can't please everyone, all the time. i
showing this car from the time i was 16(1986)and it still belonged
to my folks. back then it was bone stock and still didn't get any
respect. i actually had people who supposedly knew about cars argue
with me about what type of car it was. some would say it was a
mustang, and others would say it was some sort of modified capri,
but none of them ever heard of mclaren so i must be misinformed.
eventually i quit calling it it a asc mclaren and just said it was a
85 capri(after i modified it) and they were amazed then.....so i
really can't win. i fought with myself when rebuilding the car,
should i change it or leave it stock. it had about 60,000 on it
when i eventually bought it from my parents, so it was no queen. my
father had put some aftermarket ground effects on it that i hated,
and i never like the factory mesh style wheels. the red paint was
amazing though, it really was an odd red. but i still opted to
change it. after that i got carried away. the interior had some
wear on the drivers seat. since i couldn't afford to replace the
leather at that point in my life i went with black velour. the top
had had the windows replaced several times and was begining to look
ratty again, so i bout a new one from hank. however, i had to have
the black one after i saw it. my main regret is putting the rear
spoiler on, it will eventually be removed(a stock mustang trunks is
easy to come by), just looks too mustangy! there was really no
thought to the wheels, i had to put on the finest wheels i could
get my hands on, which is true knock off dayton wire wheels.
throughout the whole project, in the back of my mind, i made sure
that nothing would be done that could not be undone. in the end, i
was very pleased with the results. i have won several firts places
at various shows around the country and once took a best of show in
florida. never-the-less, i still have stuck with calling it a 85
capri. maybe im old enough and better informed now to explain the
life of the care with out allowing my emotions to run the game. so
who knows, maybe it will be my (mclaren) again.
