I think the other part that gives everyone the shivers about this car is the manner by which the advertiser is attempting to flog it. By touting it as a rare car, unique car, a collectors car, etc he is either being deceptive or ill-informed - and this rankles those of us who have taken a minute or so to learn anything about these cars.
It reminds me of that one chap who kept flogging the Mercury McLaren's on eBay by never mentionin that they were Mercury - instead he always said ' Mustang ' and ' Ford ' as if to catch the attention of the Stang owners and drive up the price that he might get compared to it being listed as a 'Mercury Capri' ( no offense meant to our Merc Capri fellows ). That sort of deceptive practice tends to leave you wondering about the sales tactics being used.
With regards to this 'particular' McLaren, the seller is attempting to get 'a real McLaren' market value for the car by touting its initial heritage. But this person is a professional vehicle resaler and he above anyone knows that when you customize a 'collector car' it is no longer a collector car in value. So why hunt for just under $10k for what is basically nothing more then a tweaked Mustang at this point....
In all fairness the vehicle is probably worth about $4500 maximum ( which is probably what this 'resaler' bought it for. He now hopes to catch the eye of a 'rube' that might be willing to pay double the market value for this 'rare gem', this 'rare and unique collectible'. This is one value of a having a fraternity of McLaren owners - in that the inexperienced can come and ask questions and not get suckered in to buying a mispriced or falsely promoted vehicle.
I can live with that car - it is nothing that a new paint job and some additional expenditures wouldn't return to normal. But starting with a sales figure of $9500 is ridiculous... and that is probably what tosses my cookies the most ;)
