Welcome to our place, DeliO603.
There are many reasons WHY the cars were left stock underhood. The
costs of alterations would have pushed the car into the $30,000 and
up levels (Dealer's Costs). Further it would have required new
federal certifications & all kinds of EPA certifacations.
Furthermore the car was never about performance levels about a GT
Mustang or a RS Capri. It was about customazation, uniqueness,
exclucive looks and boulivard cruising. A car to emuate the 2-Seat
Benz Roadster. Initially the target buyer was to be male over 40.
(and) THAT is exactly who the initial buyers were. They wanted more
of a "Hey, Look At Me" car, than a 0-60 1/4 mile street racer.

I hope I have shed some light on the why of how the car was designed.
