My '85, 607910, had an 85 mph speedo with no evidence of having
ever been changed. My guess is your car had a 3.08 rearend and has
been changed to 2.73 or the tire size has gone from the 225/50 tires
originally installed to a 225/60 which could also cause the
difference that you noted. Different transmissions could also
explain your difference. Just changing the speedo head would not
make a difference in noted speed.
Your door tag will identify what axle ratio was installed from the
factory. A 2.73 Traction-Lok will have a code of "M" and a 3.08
Traction-Lok will have a code of "Z". A tag attached to the rear
cover of the differential will have a code of 2L73 for a 2.73 and a
code of 3L08 for a 3.08 ratio.
