Yes, in 84, 85 & 86 the V-8 was an option in the GS, and standard in
the RS. Now, having been in the car business, I can tell you that
any dealership manager ordering cars, specifically CAPRIS for
inventory would order all GS models with either the standard 4 Cyl or
the optional 6. IF IF IF they wanted a V-8, naturally they'd order
the RS. I would say that a V-8 GS would 100% be a customer ordered
car. What reason one would have NOT to go into the RS but opt for a
GS with 302 V-8 would certainly baffle me. Yes, I can think of one
reason. The GS came in many more colors than did the color-limited
RS, so a plausable reason would have been to get a certain color.
Another reason might have been IF buyer did NOT want the AUTOMATIC
OVERDRIVE type of Automatic Trans. The Auto in the V-8 GS was NON
Auto. Overdrive. Why, would baffle me, but I am sure there were a
few who would make that choice!
In 1984 the GS came in the following colors that a buyer if a RS
could NOT have:
Dark Blue/Light Tan/Light Blue/Medium Tan or Bright Copper
In 1985 the GS came in Dark Grey/Sand Beige/Dark Brown/Dark Olive
Green/Light Blue or Dark Blue, all of which the RS was not available
in.
Finally, in 1986 Sand Beige/Dark Grey/Dark Brown/Light Blue or Dark
Blue were again available on the GS but not the RS.
I would say that the desire for a V-8 in one of the aforementioned
nine colors would have been cause for the birth of a GS V-8. I'll go
see later if I have those figures for 84/85 & 86 for you.
