My 1988 McLaren is also a 'red' version. ( although through a sad and tragic life with previous owners it ended up as a black - and will soon be reverting back to its original red when I send it in to a paint shop ).
What caught my interest was your comment about the trunk having been painted red. Ok, so let us follow the path of my cars horrid existence and see what I learned and what confirms what you have seen.
My car was a factory black LX. It went to the McLaren shop and was converted to the convertible. The body was then painted red, leaving the engine compartment the original black color. Now as I mentioned, during the horrid existence of this car one of its previous owners had the car repainted black.
At this point I reflect back to your question about the trunk being done in the matching red of the body. My trunk on first observation is black - and so I initially thought that your trunk might have been repainted. But as I looked in the trunk today I could clearly see that there ONCE WAS a bright red paint job done in my trunk. So it is clear to me that the sequence of paint jobs on my car was :
a) original car from Ford - all black
b) McLaren paint job - body red, trunk red, engine compartment left alone and in its original Ford black paint job
c) subsequent owner's paint job - made everything black.
So if your trunk is original red and your engine compartment is original black, then I suspect those are 100% correct.
Unfortunately, the 'black' paint job that was put on to this McLaren by one of its subsequent owners was that of the $300 MAACO paint variety - which basically blocks me from giving any perspective on the visual looks of the red paint job that McLaren would have done. But hopefully my observations about the trunk indeed being painted up in red by McLaren will help put your mind somewhat at ease.

At the very least you will be able to look even more proudly at your car and be doubly pleased that its was cared for by its previous owner(s). Whereas this poor car was almost to the point of being a junker destined for the autowreckers before I decided to adopt it and bring about its resurrection. Then maybe the question of paint 'orange peel' effects will become a totally moot point in your enjoyment of your car ;)

Since Sandy has recently detailed how a black mustang coupe(1988) became a red conv.; Perhaps the concern I have about my car looking so good that it led me to conclude that it must have been repainted is a just not correct.
The engine compartment is black. The entire trunk (under the mats!) area is bright red, as is the area under and around the spare. The inside/underside of the trunk lid is bright and shiny; so is the underside of the hood and the door sills and latching areas of the door themselves.
Since, some of y'all were so anxious to tell us about how you dealt with attacks upon your car(s), I am just begging on your good graces, and idle time?, to let me know how these cars looked in the first place. Sandy says, the SIKKENS paint is really great; does anyone else, on this site, have a red (Porsche, POR-027) '88 that can share his 2 cents on how their car looks and the overall appearance of the paint. To me the red paint on my car has a bit of "orange-peel" texture: Not as pronounced as the finish oon Chryslers in the '50s, but not smoothe as lacquer, either.
The paint sticker on the inside of the driver's door is about a two inch paper square upon which is printed SIKKENS. Then underneath are three lines: Color:_______, Paint Code:_______ and Date:_______. Unfortunately, there are no legible entrys on the forementioned lines. Sandy advised me to look for a similar sticker on the underside of the trunk lid, but such is not there.
Chattering about paint may be more than any of you want to do in the time it takes to type. If so, just send me a phone # and i will give you a call so we can compare notes?
