The convertible adds 300+ pounds due to underbody bracing, additional
structure reinforcement and other odds & ends using in the conversion
process. The car that has VIN beginning 1ME was pulled from the
assembly line and shipped to asc. It was originally ordered as a
coupe. The car that begins 1MH was originally ordered from the get-
go as an ascMcLaren. The 1ME was the code for a Capri, note it's the
same on your coupe, which is a 1ME. The 1MH prefix denotes an
incomplete vehicle at assembly line end and is headed to a conversion
company.
This is similiar to a Town Car headed from Wixom assembly to a body
builder for conversion into a stretch sedan, a limousine, a flower
car or a hearse. The same appplies at Cadillac on the de Ville, in
that they too have an "H" code for the same applications as listed
above pertaining to the Town Car. The "H" code signifies that the
car as shipped from the GM or Ford plant is not "Road Ready" and does
NOT conform to laws of the SASE and must be completed at a coach
builder, who - when done - affixes his tag to the door jamb, usually.
