Subject: Re: [ASC McLaren ] Any one interested in a cheap Mclaren coupe???
Body:
I have all 100% of the dealer order listings for 1988. I do not have
them for any other year, except 1990. 1988 & 1990. However, I can
offer an explanation. In 1988 ascMcLaren had a specail "deal" with
dealers. If one looks on the list, they will see that many, many,
many dealers took them (in 1988, remember) in groups of 7 units.
Looking at the listing one will see NOBODY took 5 or 6 units. A few
took 4, many took 3. Very few took 2 or 1. Absolutely nobody took 8
or 9 or 10. The next big group was 14 units (the big mega razzle-
dazzle highway stores). I found out (after many years of asking)
why. ascMcLaren offered free freight to the dealer on a load of 7
units. If you visualize the nu-car truck carrier, they hold 7 cars!!
So, if the dealer took "a load" seven 1988 ascMcLarens at ONE time,
he saved $2,100 ($300.00 @ car). Smaller dealers who were interested
took like 3 or 4 cars. If they were "gutzy" they opted for the 7 car
load. Dealers with 1 or 2 probably did not stock them, but had
retail buyers come in that placed a single order. The "big-boys" out
on the highway took 14 or so.
Therefore, I don't doubt that ascMcLaren might have had a
similiar "deal" with Mercury Dealers back 9n 1985 or 1986. Because
of the MUCH smaller amount (numbers) maybe the "deal" was 3 Coupes &
3 or 4 SC 2-Seat Roadsters, ALL ordered at the same time.
I can tell you that there were NO NO NO 1985 coupes sold WEST of
the "Rockies" in 1985 as ascMcLaren did not have the necessary
paperwork to ship them west of the Rockies, until 1986 Job 1. Any
1985 (or 1984) Coupes out in California or neighboring states
were "imported" there by their owner(s) upon moving west!
1985 SC 2-Seat Roadsters WERE shipped out West, but I have never been
able to find out what the difference was - but there was
some "problem" ~~
