I find that a little confusing also.
Starting in 1985, Ford began using stainless-steel tubular "headers" on 5.0L
4-barrel T-5 equipped cars. Early CFI/AOD cars came with carryover cast iron
exhaust manifolds that were used on the '84 cars but later in '85 these were
switched over to the same tube-header as the T-5 cars got.
>From 1986 on all 5.0L equipped cars came with the stainless steel tubular
headers.
Anyone familiar with the production tubular header knows that although they
were an improvement over the cast iron manifolds, they were very restrictive
at the bolt flanges. It was crimped down for clearance for the production
line crew to be able to attach the header with their torque guns easily
during assembly.
