Body:
I feel for you Mike.
My wife tolerates my obsession with my cars (toys) mostly because I had them
before we were married, and she understood what she was getting into.
I actually had more but decided that I needed to thin the herd a little and
settle on what I have now. Unless we become suddenly wealthy (unknown
inheritance or win the lottery) my toy limit is four. If I want another, I
have to sell one that I currently have.
I think for the most part every wife find themselves "jealous" of the
project car at one time or another because of the time & energy that they
consume and I know many marriages that have ended because of it.
I don't get to spend as much time or money as I used to on my toys since I
have gotten married and now that we have a 21 month old son, but sacrifices
must be made in order to keep the household stable and running smoothly.
Here is what has worked for me.
My wife loves to go to craft fairs and when she isn't going with her
friends, I always offer to tag along. When I do go with her she is thrilled
that I show an interest in her hobby and although I don't have as good of a
time as she does, it always gives me some much needed ammunition for the
time when I want to go to a swap meet or car show.
My wife says that my Ranchero is one of the ugliest vehicle's she has ever
seen and will not ride in it.
I guess it's a guy thing, because we have quizzed her girlfriends about them
and they always agree that Ranchero's & El Camino's are ugly, but most of my
friends like it.
She does like the McLaren though, and she knows that unless we fell into
financial hardship the toys will never be one of our daily drivers.
