Really great information for any of us that are not "expert" in the care and feeding of one of these beasts!

Thanks a million!

Subject: [ASC McLaren ] Weak Spots

Thank you!
The thing few ever ask me is an important area. That area is weak
links or weak spots.  The "Mustang" Part of the car is pretty much
bullet proof.  But many of the ascMcLaren altered spots have
weakness. One area that's a real pain to repair and breaks very
easily is the pivot arms that secure the top to the header (Header is
the horizontial top of the W'shield.  These "arms" are pot metal.
Pot metal is the "No Frills" entry level of metals.  Never Ever put
your top UP from inside your McLaren.  You need to always be on the
exterior.  After gently pulling up your roof, there is a pin on each
side of the front leading edge of the top.  Put that pin in the hole
(reciptical) or female reciever to to the pin and with the open palm
of your hand and fingers spread, push down on the exterior of the top
pushing the pin into the hole.  Then go around to the OTHER side & do
the same.  Once BOTH are in, then you may gently rotate the arm to
pull the top down onto the header.
O T H E R W I S E >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
If you attempt to rotate the arm IN ORDER TO PULL THE PIN DOWN INTO
THE HOLE,  without palming it from the out side to PUT it down into
the hole....the arm is gonna snap & break off!  Now, you got a BIG
problem.

Another weak spot....
You've got the front part buttoned up good, now we go to the rear.
You fold the rear 1/4 Up & Forward, in order to tilt up & slide
backward the tonneau cover, BUT BUT BUT before you slide that sucker
forward, you need to reach inside the rear of the roof, and push OUT
that gathered roof material, or you're goning to slide forward that
tonneau's metal pins and squeeze the roof material and put a nice
sized hole or rip in it!

How many of these cars have the black PLASTIC (AS IN PAPER THIN
PLASTIC) on the inside of the leading edge of the roof (running along
under both sun visors) have this part all cracked and busted?
THIS is from a "meaning-no-harm" Helper seated in the passenger's
seat HELPING ('ya, right) you to pull the top down by inserting their
fingers between the inside of the canvas roof & the header and
pulling down, and suddenly the thing cracks to pieces like a saltine
cracker!  "Please don't help"  Should do it, hopefully.

Got a 89 or 90?  Your wheel center caps (the ones that say
ascMcLarern off center) come loose.  Remove them every year and
GENTLY (there's THAT word, again) spread the tabs wider.  They get
loose & the things go the the shoulder of the road forever.

So many other things happen to these cars.  You get to the point
where you see the exact same problems with 70% of the cars.

Just some hints.....
