I was actually surprised that the 245's didn't rub - even when turning the wheel full left or right. I think there are two reasons why I can get away with the 245's....
The 50 tire has a lower profile - hence a smaller overall diameter. So when you actually measure the circumference of a 245 X 50 or 245 X 45 Kumho you will find that they measure up roughly to the diameter of the 225 X 60 tire.
One thing to note is that you really do need to get an eyeball on the specific tire that you are looking at. What I have found over the years is that tire sizes are something like shoe sizes... you know what I mean.... in that a size 10 in one company is not always the identical size for fit of a size 10 by another company.
When I was offered the Kumho tires, I physically took it out to the car and placed it next to the tires that were on the car. I had had a bad experience in the past with the Cobra, where I had bought a set of 225 X 60 X 15 which fitted more like a 215 X 78 X 15.
So if you have the opportunity to physically take the tire you are considering and place it next to the tire that is on your car than you can assure yourself that it will fit.
The other thing that I have been told - and I cannot swear to this because it doesn't make much sense - is that the 87 and 88 wheel well and fender placement has more room ( in the front wheel well and the rear wheel well ). I have never exactly sat down to verifiy this however. But it does appear to be a fairly common 'urban myth' about the 87/88 Mustangs compared to the 89-93 Mustangs.
So if it is at all possible... try to physically place your tire selections physically next to your car and see how the height of that tire matches up against the tire on your car. And what I did with the Kumho is to stand behind the car and see how the tread pattern looked on my car from behind - because I was quite interested that the look of the rubber being laid down on the road and its tread pattern 'looked good'.
But the other writer is correct when he mentioned the stickiness of these tires. In order to drive from Pennsylvania upto Canada I had to drive the car with these brand new Kuhmo's that were only 1 week old on the car at the time. I was a little worried as I had not had the opportunity to get some significant 'break in mileage' on the tires before setting out on the 500 mile drive. During the drive I encountered 'hellish' rain storms etc... and not once did my tires give me any cause for concern and they handled the wet roads as if they were 'dry'.... no hydroplaning whatsoever.
Nuff said. I am getting 'tired' ;)
