Up here in Ottawa, you can take your rims to any GM dealer and they can send them out for 'refurbishing' back to original spec. Not a bad deal.
There is a company located in Montreal, Quebec Canada, that has made quite a name for themselves with their rim restorations. They charge $75 Canadian per wheel - which is like $50 US per wheel. I had them refinsihed the lace pattern rims on my GTA ( which is even a more complicated pattern than the McLaren rim ).
The problem with doing a 'home job' on the painting of the rims is that you are practically ensuring that you will probably be doing it again the next spring. I wish I could give you more advice on doing it yourself, but I figure for the low cost of getting it redone by rim pros, the time, effort, cost of materials, etc make their charge quite reasonable for a long lasting, original mint looking end product.
I don't know if I would ever trust a rim to 'just any paint shop' though. I believe a lot of bodyshops would be willing to take a crack at doing it, but frankly most of them do not have the right tools or equipment to do a 'decent' restoration to 'like new'. They will probably bead blast the rim, mask it up and spray the puppy. You might even get lucky and have some kind of clear coat slapped on it to protect the shiny metal. But if I had my 'druthers' than I would 'druther' let guys who only work on rim restorations handle the job ;)

I'm thinking of using a masking marker, like what you
can use on windows, then spraying them with paint. Has
anyone tried this?
Also, what have you tried to restore the unpainted
areas to original luster. Mine are dirty and corroded
enough that I'm not even sure what original luster IS!
