I think that the road noise is more a function of the type of muffler that you have on the car.
For example, on my car I have a set of Mac's from the headers, through to the mufflers and out the tailpipes. With the Mac muffler system the 'noise' goes out the ass end of the car and usually tends to rumble the car behind you.
With other muffler systems there are varying degrees of 'in the car' noise. If you surf around to some of the web sites of the various manufacturers you will actually find where they show that their own various models of mufflers have different 'road noise' tendencies. I think I even saw one site that gave you the db levels both in the car and outside the car for each of their muffler types.
The reason I chose the Mac is that it promised ( and delivered ) that the interior noise would not drown out your car radio. And yet the rumble coming out the back two pipes is enough to definitely let the folks 'outside the car' know that you are not running a helpless four cylinder.
As the actual 'road noise' of a convertible, the McLaren is no different on that count than a Jaguar convertible, Volkswagon convertible, or any other type of vert. Ragtops are never going to be as quiet as their hard top brothers. At the same time you have a fabric separating you from the skies above. At certain speeds that fabric is going to make 'noise' that you would not hear from a hard top.
Fortunately the McLaren does its best to try to seal off the whistling noises that normally seep in through the window, by providing a semi-decent rubber insulation where the glass meets with the ragtop's frame.
As for driving with the top down - well it will sound like any other convertible ripping through the air at 60 miles per hour. No better and no worst. That is something that all convertibles share in common.
