Up in Ottawa the rule on Tinting is that

a) you can never tint the front window

b) the side windows can only be tinted to a 'certain' level' of tint. And I think they even specify which color of tint that you can use.

c) the rear window is allowed to be tinted 'like' the side windows or to a more darker degree.

The cops basically want to ensure that if your car is used for 'something bad' - then people will be able to get a look at the driver. As well, for the safety of the police when approaching a vehicle they have pulled over, it allows them to see the 'drivers movements'.

The safest 'catch all' answer to this question is to simply ask at the local LIMOUSINE place. NEVER trust the tint shops or the rolls of tint that you might buy at Pep Boys or for us Canucks, Canadian Tire ( our equivalent to a Pep Boy). The Limo shops know exactly what is legal in your specific jurisdiction. And most of them can point you to the best place in your area to get the job done.

It depends on where you are from, here in Michigan it is illegal to tint the
front or driver & passenger windows except for a 4" strip at the top of the
window and the local law enforcement WILL give you a ticket for it AND make
you show up at the station for an inspection within a week to make sure it
was removed.
Where I live there aren't many car-jackings or anything like that, plus for
me, my car is in the garage out of harms way 90% of the time.

willing to bet that it would cut down on people road raging against
you(again, could be a 300lb cop driving). window tint can be easily
removed and replaced at any time without any damage to the
vehicle... all i see are positives here. so in my opinion tint
away.
